Why? That’s the question that I have heard people ask the most about Harry and Meghan making a documentary about the story. The truth is that we don’t really have the right to ask the why and before you all come at me and say that we do – I will explain.
I don’t feel like any of us have the right to ask the why’s because we all have become so engrossed in their lives, hanging on every word, every article, every picture. So what gives anyone the right to ask why, when you know that you are sitting down and taking it all in.
And then there is the fact that we, the non celebrities and royals in life, we all have the right to tell our stories. We may not do it in Netflix documentaries, but we all do it on things like social media posts and commenting on everything.
The difference is that they are celebrities and part of the most famous family in the world. But, even with that, they are humans and they have been treated as though they are in the wrong for protecting themselves and their family.
These two know that there are a million people out there telling their story, but their story isn’t being told by people they know. It’s being told by people that seem to be out to make a profit. It’s being told by the media and if we’re all being honest with ourselves we know that holes are being filled in by second hand accounts. So Harry and Meghan telling their story, on their terms makes sense.
A friend of theirs told them awhile ago that they should document this period of their lives. The documentary is filled with iPhone videos which are very personal, and very raw. But that’s part of what makes this documentary so real.
The two spoke about how they met within the first fifteen minutes of the documentary. We’d long known that they were introduced from a friend, we didn’t know that they had met via Instagram. But the two had and it’s very interesting to me, because they say that royals don’t really have personal Instagram, but knowing that Harry did and seeing the pics that he had on his account – we love.
Harry was scrolling through his account and saw a picture with a snapchat filter on Meghan – one of those dog ear ones – and was like who is that? He reached out to his friend, who reached out to Meghan to see if she wanted to meet Harry.
But her friend called him Prince Haz, and Meghan wondered who that was.
Meghan was on her summer of fun. She was intent on being single. She wanted to travel with girlfriends. She didn’t want complicated in any way.
But she agreed to meet with Harry and when she did, he was a half hour late. She was turned off by this whole thing, but when he did show up, they instantly connected and their hour conversation made them both feel at ease.
She enjoyed it so much and that night texted him to see if he wanted to have dinner. It was forward and American, but they did have dinner the next night. Soho House Outpost, 76 Dean Street in London was the location of their first meeting and their first date. Meghan was like five minutes late, but Harry didn’t care.
He said that she could have been as late as she wanted to, he wasn’t moving. He wanted to see her again.
There was only one picture taken that night, to capture the joy that they felt.
The first three episodes of the six part documentary, Harry & Meghan, is streaming now on Netflix.
