Netflix dropped the official trailer for You People and Jonah Hill is giving main character energy right off the bat. Usually, this actor is relegated to the side character of the story. Always supporting bigger stars like Zac Efron or Leonardo DiCaprio. But You People is giving him a chance to step up, fall in love, and meet the family in a movie that is giving major rom-com vibes with a heavy dose of reality.
In You People, Hill plays Ezra. He feels stuck, a little lost, and wants to fall in love. It just hasn’t happened yet for some reason. (Feel you on this one.) His life takes a turn when he meets Amira (Lauren London). Even though their first encounter goes a little off the rails, they work. Before you know it they’re together, falling in love, and planning their future together. That’s where their families come in.
When Ezra wants to marry Amira, he realizes that they haven’t really taken the time to meet each other’s families. With that comes the realities of Ezra being white and Amira being Black in today’s America. What follows are uncomfortable but real conversations with Ezra’s parents Arnold (David Duchovny) and Shelley (Julia Louis Dreyfus) and Amira’s parents Akbar (Eddie Murphy) and Fatima (Nia Long).
But even in the midst of it all, we’re hoping that Ezra and Amira make it through and have their happy ending. And if they come to have a better understanding of each other along the way, even better.
