When we’re talking about 2014, it feels like a lifetime ago, but it wasn’t even a decade ago. It was the glory days of One Direction. It was when Ed Sheeran and Elle Goulding were “dating.” Yes, for those of you that don’t remember – Ed and Elle were supposedly a couple, even though we know now… they weren’t.
Along with the rumor of them dating were the rumors about why they broke up, well… all of that blame was placed on Elle Goulding. Rumors were that she cheated on Ed with Niall Horan.
While it was been almost a decade, it’s definitely a moment in time that Elle hasn’t outrun. Though we’d like to say that times have changed, well, they haven’t all that much. Rumors are rampant all the time and if you are the subject of those rumors then well, you live in fear and anxiousness of what trouble rumors can cause.
Elle Goulding spoke with People and she not only spoke about how she finds people still interested in those rumors fascinateing, but also trauma that those rumors caused her.
“You know, completely honestly, it caused me a lot of trauma, actually.” Goulding said.
“I envy the fact that my friends just spent their 20s having flings and one-night stands and what every 20-something goes through in private. But every single thing I did was written about,” she added. “I was made to feel like a terrible person and I really struggled with that because I know I’m not.”
We can’t even imagine what it would be like to have everything – the good, the bad, and the ugly – written about us.
“I became kind of reclusive. I didn’t want to perform. That’s why I wrote that comment because every day I get comments about this stupid teenage situation. It was nothing and it was private – and it caused me such a huge amount of grief and I resent it.”
We can’t blame her on that one.
