With IPs for beloved children’s tales becoming public domain, I’m not even surprised that next up is a gory horror Cinderella film in the works. And in comparison to the How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Winnie the Pooh horror movies, for some reason Cinderella getting a spin where she turns into a slasher, is kind of intriguing.
Ever since I was a kid, I felt like Cinderella got one of the worst deals out of all of the princesses. I didn’t want to be Cinderella. Because all Cinderella told me was that you basically had to be Ted Lasso in the face of continuous abuse until a fairy came around and gave you a pretty dress to be able to snag a man. Eventually, that man would come and take you away from your terrible circumstances and everything would be okay. At least the Disney version did. And that never sat well with me.
The 2015 Cinderella movie tried to give us a more independent heroine. But she was still unapologetically kind even when Cate Blanchett was looking stunning and being sickening to her. And the 2021 Cinderella went the way of Robin Hood Men in Tights and just gave me something funny. Neither satisfied my urge for Cinderella to get her revenge. Then Cinderella’s Curse decided to make an appearance on the scene.
According to Bloody disgusting, Cinderella’s Curse is set to go ahead and begin filming in the UK next month. They have an expected release date of October 2023. It’s a little bit tight admittedly. But creative imagination really does push people in unexpected ways and I bet they’re giving their everything to this. The “they” being Louisa Warren, who is working with ChampDog Studios and ITN Studios to release the horror version of Cinderella. And her quote kinda has set my expectations a little high.
Louisa Warren told Bloody Disgusting, “This an incredibly unique spin on the Cinderella we all love and know. There are going to be some truly horrific deaths by her hands.” And this feeds directly into what I was saying earlier about feeling dissatisfied with the way that Cinderella dealt with everything that was going on with her life. In this new horror twist, it seems like Cinderella is seeking justice for herself against those that hurt her. And no I do not support violence. I just support a young woman’s right to set right the wrongs that have been done to her. And if that means a little slashing, then so be it.
Personally, I hope that this version of Cinderella keeps to its bright colors and eye-catching blue dress. But maybe she has a knife hidden in her boot instead of glass slippers. Maybe she’s trying to take down the kingdom. And maybe she steps up to her evil stepmother and stepsisters and shows them what’s up. Also, I still hope that she gets the guy. Or girl. No discrimination here. Because even if she’s going for a little revenge, I wouldn’t mind a little romance. As long as it isn’t the sole focus of the story, I’m down to watch Cinderella’s Curse in this dark retelling.
