The Australian drama Safe Home is finally making its way stateside. Starring Aisha Dee from The Bold Type, it tells the story of a young woman from public relations who finds her world shaken up when she starts working for a legal service that helps “people escaping domestic violence.” It becomes apparent quickly that this isn’t like any other job she’s ever had. These are real people who are speaking up, being brave, and risking their lives for a chance to live life on their own terms and free of fear.
Tackling something as serious as domestic violence is something creator Anna Barnes didn’t take lightly as it was inspired by their time working at a family legal center in Australia. With Australian public broadcaster Special Broadcasting Services (SBS), according to Variety, they took their time in creating a show that didn’t pander or ignore the realities of domestic violence. “In creating ‘Safe Home’ we have worked with professionals in the sector. So, while fictional, it is rooted in authenticity and the real-life processes of the legal services.”
