We’re back for another week! The Rookie 6×03 “Trouble in Paradise” is a very irregular episode that is divided between Bailey & Nolan’s honeymoon and what happens at the police station in their absence, while we enjoy Chenford…and not everything turns out as well as it seemed at first. Ready?
Here we go!
“You Never Disappoint Me”
Chenford is the best of The Rookie 6×03 “Trouble in Paradise.” We have witnessed many phases of their relationship and this episode beautifully captured the way Tim cares for Lucy. He knows that she is prepared for that exam and that all she is doing is overthinking, overpreparing – that does exist, by the way – and, with all of this, getting more nervous and feeling more anxious.
So Tim takes care of her and helps her even despite herself. When he sees her so desperate that he’s studying with Smitty of all people, he knows he has to get Lucy out of that vicious cycle, so Tim butts in and takes her on patrol along with him and Celina. The same thing happens when he lets her sleep in. Lucy isn’t aware of it, but she needs to rest, and being tired of it isn’t doing her any favors for studying.
And then, when things with the exam don’t go as expected, Tim is there to support her, take care of her, and comfort her. Right next to her, all the time. So yes, in The Rookie 6×03 “Trouble in Paradise” Tim is super cute and is doing a lot to earn the title of “best boyfriend in the world.” And we love him for it.
A Woman in a Man’s World in The Rookie 6×03 “Trouble in Paradise”
On the other hand, we have the result of Lucy’s exam. It bothers us so much that this happened to her because she deserved better than this and we hate it. That said, unfortunately, what happened is an accurate reflection of reality. Sometimes, you try your hardest for something and you don’t get it…especially if you are a woman in a job always considered “for men.”
We’re sure that if Lucy had been a guy, that man would not have judged her, but would have congratulated her for getting a full confession, however, since she is a woman, this guy judged her too harshly and used this as an excuse to not give her the promotion she so clearly deserves.
Also, this plot may be interesting for the future. We want to see what awaits Lucy professionally after this result and, above all, how she deals with the fact that she is number 17 on the list.
From what we have seen, Lucy’s parents are highly demanding and don’t value anything but perfection. This creates a self-demand in Lucy that is unhealthy since she feels that she disappoints others when she doesn’t get what they expect her to get and she feels guilty about it. We see this clearly in The Rookie 6×03 “Trouble in Paradise.”
So it’s going to be interesting to see her deal with the frustration of not achieving her goal and realizing that the world doesn’t end because she didn’t achieve it. She can try again and the people who love her are and will continue to stand by her, regardless of the result of that test.
Everything Feels Too Weird
In The Rookie 6×03, “Trouble in Paradise” Aaron and Celina face the consequences of what happened in the previous episode. At first, Celina focuses much more on what she must feel and tries not to upset Aaron than on what she feels.
She keeps telling herself and Aaron that everything is okay because she wants it to be. She needs it to be. It was just a stupid thing that happened and that’s it. She and Aaron are friends and can act like nothing happened. The problem is that they can’t.
In The Rookie 6×03 “Trouble in Paradise,” Celina feels a jumble of feelings that she has to unravel to truly overcome what is happening. On the one hand, everything feels too weird with Aaron and she hates that. They had a unique complicity and now everything feels strange and weird and they don’t know how to be around each other.
On the other hand, Celina is angry both for having lost that complicity they had due to Aaron’s absurd impulse and for having had consequences for her work for that same reason. For him, nothing changed at work, but for her it was different. Celina is constantly being questioned about what is happening and almost tested at every turn. And it’s not fair.
So, finally, Celina accepts what she feels and is honest with Aaron about it. That’s the first step to getting everything back to how it was before. Now, it’s about both of them letting time pass and every day it will get easier.
We have to say that The Rookie 6×03 “Trouble in Paradise” has a point because it shows us Aaron in therapy, so it looks like we’re going to see how he deals with his problems and begins to heal his trauma.
Not So Sweet Honeymoon in The Rookie 6×03 “Trouble in Paradise”
Bailey and Nolan’s honeymoon is the worst storyline of The Rookie 6×03 “Trouble in Paradise.” The first reason for this is that it doesn’t make any kind of sense. Who, in the middle of their honeymoon, approaches a lonely stranger to introduce themselves? We mean, there are surely many more interesting things to do on a honeymoon than that. Thousands of more interesting things. Anything.
Also, from the looks of it, Bailey and Nolan are outside of Los Angeles, therefore outside of their jurisdiction, so the lawyer in me is screaming – and not in a good way – at how that gets passed around. High and simple Bailey and Nolan start investigating what’s happening, even involving Nyla and Angela, and they don’t even get in trouble for it.
As if this were not enough, this part of The Rookie 6×03 “Trouble in Paradise” feels disconnected from the rest of the plots, breaking the rhythm of the episode. Something that increases with the way the plot is presented, recorded as if it were a home video or a video for TikTok.
We would have done without Nolan and Bailey for this one or, at most, we would have shown them happy on their honeymoon and we would have filled the time with the rest of the characters. We’re sure it would have been more interesting than this episode is. We said what we said.
The Rookie Season 6 airs Tuesdays at 9/8 on ABC.
