We’re ready for one last rodeo! The Rookie 5×22 “Under Siege” is the first season finale that bets everything on the action without any kind of emotional development and we have mixed feelings. Ready?
Here we go!
An Execution That Could Be Better

The Rookie 5×22 “Under Siege” is an episode that feels half-finished, as if it were the first part of a story of two. It’s hard to review the episode because sometimes we feel like it was too much but, at the same time, we feel like it was too little. And nothing has happened that can be commented on beyond what we saw. So let’s weigh in on the execution of the season finale.
As we mentioned, The Rookie 5×22 “Under Siege” leaves you halfway. Wanting more and like you wasted an hour of your time, all at once. When we see a procedural, we wait for the resolution of the case, even if threads are hanging from which to pull later. But the episode doesn’t give us that.
That is to say, The Rookie 5×22 “Under Siege” builds the whole story and gives it enough packaging to be spectacular but then it doesn’t finish the job and leaves you halfway. You’re waiting all the time for the reveal of who’s behind it all to blow your mind for the season finale to end on a high note…but that never happens.
So it feels like you wasted an hour of your time watching a story get sliced in half. Everything would have been better if they had at least revealed the real culprit of what is happening and resolved the whole matter. That way, they would have left Aaron’s health as a cliffhanger. That would have been strong enough to hook the audience for the next season and, at the same time, give a satisfying ending to the season finale.
In addition to this, there are the plot holes that we detected in The Rookie 5×22 “Under Siege.” It doesn’t seem too believable that a band of mercenaries is always like five steps ahead of the LAPD, they’re professionals and we understand that but there comes a point where it’s too unbelievable.
As if that were not enough, at first everything seemed like a personal revenge carried out with twisted methods but, in the end, it seems more like a business deal, which doesn’t fit at all with the development of the plot.
And then there is the lack of heart. We feel that the episode is sometimes too little because the most important part of it is missing: the emotional one.
Heartless Plot in The Rookie 5×22 “Under Siege”

The season finale of the show is the time when the long-term plots of the series are resolved, while emotional breakthroughs are made between the characters. On this occasion, The Rookie 5×22 “Under Siege” decides to go the other way and create a new story for the season finale… but it’s a plot that feels empty of content because it’s only based on action. And a show like this needs much more than that.
However, action and an engaging plot is the only thing The Rookie 5×22 “Under Siege” has to offer and, although the action is on point and creates the atmosphere of chaos that the episode needs, the plot deflates once the episode decides not to give any sense of justice or resolution to the viewer.
In short, The Rookie 5×22 “Under Siege” bets everything on one card and gets a regular play. Not too bad but not as spectacular as it was intended to be.
It’s crystal clear that they decided to do an ending with two cliffhangers for the sake of surprise and to keep the viewer on edge. But we think they paid too high a price to get it. The Rookie 5×22 “Under Siege” left things half-done and feels empty in terms of content, since it doesn’t have anything in what the show is best at, the emotional development of the characters.
So, after all, the question is, was it worth everything they did to get the viewer stuck in their chair? And our answer is no.
