Godzilla fans are having a moment right now thanks to the release of Godzilla Minus One back in November 2023 and the recent release of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Toho brought Godzilla back to his villainous roots to remind viewers that he isn’t a hero and should be feared. Meanwhile, the MonsterVerse is keeping the King of the Monsters on the side of moral good. However, the current question is, who will be the next Godzilla villain in the MonsterVerse?
Having a new villain is nice as the MUTOs and Skar King have shown. However, bringing in longtime favorites to come out to wreak some havoc is something fans want to see. Should the MonsterVerse want to bring back someone familiar, these two kaiju would be great to have as the next Godzilla villain.
Gigan
Sent to Earth by beings known as the M Space Hunter Nebula Aliens, Gigan is a villain who debuted back in 1972’s Godzilla vs. Gigan. A bird-like dinosaur with cyber enhancements, Gigan is considered one of the most brutal villains in the franchise and has remained a favorite among fans. With a circular saw in his chest, hooks for hands, and a red cybernetic visor that shoots laser beams for eyes, Gigan is truly a unique foe and many fans enjoy watching him and Godzilla duke it out.
Adding him to the MonsterVerse would be a nice treat and give him the boost he needs. It would bring back a villain that longtime Godzilla fans love and introduce him to new fans. Plus, if the MonsterVerse wants a great reason to bring back Mothra again, this is it. The two of them fought in Godzilla: Final Wars and seeing them in an aerial fight would be a sight to behold. And it’s always a treat to see the King and Queen of the Monsters team up to take down a mighty foe. This is why Gigan is an excellent option for the next Godzilla villain. He’s got the look, the power, and the brutal personality that makes him a great threat to the world.
But there is one kaiju who outdoes Gigan in the cruelty department…
Destoroyah
He is iconic among Godzilla fans because of how utterly sadistic he is. He is one kaiju who enjoys causing pain and suffering and hurting Godzilla in the worst way possible. In Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, Destoroyah attacked Godzilla’s son, Godzilla Junior, the first time they met without provocation. However, what cemented his evil reputation was when he killed Godzilla Junior just to hurt the King of the Monsters. He didn’t even give Godzilla time to grieve and dragged him away from his fallen son’s body to fight.
Destoroyah is one villain that fans love to hate and love to watch. His cruelty knows no bounds and he revels in the destruction and death he causes. He is evil incarnate which makes him another great option for the next Godzilla villain. Destoroyah would have no qualms about throwing the world off balance by killing various kaiju and destroying cities.
Other Villains
There are other longtime favorite villains who would be excellent choices. Biollante is the first female kaiju antagonist who was created from spliced cells of Godzilla, a human, and a rose. She left her mark on the Godzilla franchise even if her time was short. Orga is an alien who can absorb his opponent’s genetic material and essentially become a clone of them. He is another good option who would be a nice challenge for the King of the Monsters. If the MonsterVerse is looking to bring Mothra back, she has an evil counterpart in Battra. Unlike Mothra, Battra sees humanity as a threat and wants to exterminate them.
Finally, there’s King Ghidorah. There’s always a chance he can reappear despite the fact he met his end in Godzilla vs. Kong. His skull was presumably destroyed during their fight with Mechgodzilla, but we don’t know for certain. If it’s still around, there’s a chance someone could try to clone him and bring him back. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire revealed that he has a lot of admirers which could be a foreshadowing. Mecha Ghidorah, anyone?
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is now in theaters.
