Deadpool & Wolverine feels like Deadpool fanfiction, and I don’t hate it. In fact, I’m kind of down with the way that this movie feels like an absolute fever dream where the movie is going to end with Deadpool sitting next to the bed of his kid self, closing a book, and then saying, “That’s how I met my future husband.” Now that I’m thinking about it, that could happen. This is Deadpool after all and he would take a side quest mission to be a troll for reasons. The point being, like the previous movies, this sequel feels like it’s unapologetically self-aware and leans into it.
Further proof that is Deadpool fanfiction comes in the form of the official trailer. Our lead ends up at a bar where Wolverine is drinking his woes away. And our beloved resident a**hole doesn’t take no for an answer as he weaves a tragic recap of what has happened to Wolverine and what will happen to Deadpool if he loses his family. It’s also kind of brave of Wade to go out there and ask for help. Even though I truly believe that he is terrified of losing his family but also so excited to have an adventure with Logan. He has dimensions and isn’t afraid to own up to that.
As the official trailer goes on, it follows some obvious beats. Deadpool appeals to Wolverine’s nature as an X-Men, they have a couple of tussles where they pull each other’s pigtails before they become brothers in arms. It’s fanfiction that Wade will have commissioned into fanart before creating a PowerPoint to tell Vanessa all about it. And honestly, work. Hollywood is a bit much nowadays and we need something refreshing and funny. And yes, that counts for Marvel as well.
