One Piece season 2 is gearing up with the Netflix adaptation getting a new co-showrunner and 8 new actors.
Based on Eiichiro Oda’s manga and animated series, it tells the story of a ragtag group of friends as they encounter pirates, adventure, and so much more on the open sea. And when it premiered in 2023, fans were rightfully skeptical. We’ve been duped by Dragon Ball Z, Ghost in the Shell, and Death Note adaptations. A bit of healthy skepticism is real. But when the show premiered, even long-time fans were shocked at the love, care, and dedication that was put into the series.
Now, according to Deadline, season 2 has a whole lot of work happening behind the scenes.
First up, a new co-showrunner. Season 1 writer, executive producer and co-showrunner Matt Owens is still with the show for season 2. He’s now being joined by Joe Tracz, who has worked as a writer on A Series of Unfortunate Events and Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Steve Maeda, who developed the series with Owens will remain on the series as executive producer instead of co-showrunner.
As for the cast, there’s so much to cover as characters straight from Eiichiro Oda’s manga are heading our way.
Four characters that are part of a criminal syndicate have found their way to One Piece season 2. According to Deadline, David Dastmalchian (Oppenheimer) is Mr. 3, Jazzara Jaslyn (Warrior) is Miss Valentine, Camrus Johnson (Batwoman) plays Mr. 5, and Daniel Lasker (Raised By Wolves) is Mr. 9. They’re joined by Callum Kerr (Monarch) as Smoker, Julia Rehwald (Fear Street) as Tashigi, Rob Colletti (The Many Saints of Newark) as Wapol, and Ty Keogh (24 Hours To Live) as Dalton.
Kerr’s character is interesting because he was actually featured in the season 1 finale. We don’t get to see his face but we do see him sitting at a desk, a light, a pile of rocks and a cigar accompanying him as he looks at Luffy’s wanted poster. He takes his cigar and places it on Luffy’s face, lighting the thing on fire. And while we’re happy to see all these additions to season 2, we can’t help but hope that all the Jamie Lee Curtis chatter of her joining the crew is true. She’s joined Borderlands, the live-action adaptation of the popular game. So why not also join One Piece season 2?
One Piece season 1 is now available on Netflix.
