George R.R. Martin has spoken. Last week, the writer had promised to spill the tea about the mistakes that, in his opinion, House of the Dragon had made in Season 2. And today he has kept his promise by publishing a post on his blog. And we thought he should have kept his mouth shut. Ready to know why?
Here we go!
For Martin, one of the main problems of House of the Dragon Season 2 was the scene known by fans as Blood and Cheese, in which Helaena is forced to decide which of her children should die.
And we’re not going to lie, we all expected much more from Season 2 of House of the Dragon after an incredible first season that set the bar high, but in our opinion, George R.R. Martin should keep his opinions to himself on this and get to writing.
We do not think it’s good form of Martin to so publicly criticize a project that not only adapts one of his books from the Ice and Fire universe but in which he is also involved as executive producer. Some things have to be said internally and should not make it to the public. This is one of them.
Part of the George R.R. Martin’s post on his personal blog is below:
Martin’s reasons for believing that Blood and Cheese was poorly crafted in the show are legitimate, but they are ones to be written in an internal email or spoken to in person. That said, as legitimate as Martin’s reasons are, there is no excuse for dragging the showrunners and actors through the mud.
The actors are just there, reciting their lines and nothing else, they are not to blame for decisions. As for the showrunners, certain creative decisions fall on their shoulders, but, if we are having this conversation, it’s rather cowardly of Martin to pass the buck and not take his own responsibility as executive producer.
Also, we did not see George R.R. Martin this outraged with the last few seasons of Game of Thrones or its unmentionable ending either. Blood and Cheese is a trifle compared to this. If that weren’t enough, if Martin felt the need to share his frustration with the world, there are more diplomatic ways to say certain things.
Not content with leaving no stone unturned, Martin posted spoilers for what’s coming up in House of the Dragon. The post on Martin’s personal blog disappeared within minutes of being posted — though the internet is definitely faster — and we’re guessing the spoilers are the reason. A PR person and some really angry lawyers must have called Martin this afternoon… too bad they didn’t do it sooner so we could have avoided this whole mess.
So yeah, George R.R. Martin should really just get on with writing the book he’s been promising to publish for YEARS. That’d be the best course of action.
