If anyone is shocked that Nicholas Sparks writes a novel and it’s getting adapted, well… we’re not sure what to tell you. Now, do we like all his books? No. Do we like all his movies? No. But will we read and watch them? Absolutely.
At least we’re being honest.
Sparks latest book, Counting Miracles, has already cast its lead for the upcoming adaptation. The actor who has been cast is none other than Reacher star Alan Ritchson. Now, we will honor saying he’s from Reacher, but we’re into fandoms and he’ll always be one of the stars of The Hunger Games to us.
We haven’t picked up the book as of yet, but we read the synopsis so we could see what it is about. The official synopsis from Penguin Random House reads as follows, “Tanner Hughes was raised by his grandparents, following in his grandfather’s military footsteps to become an Army Ranger. His whole life has been spent abroad, and he is the proverbial rolling stone: happiest when off on his next adventure, zero desire to settle down. But when his grandmother passes away, her last words to him are find where you belong. She also drops a bombshell, telling him the name of the father he never knew—and where to find him.”
It continues, “Tanner is due at his next posting soon, but his curiosity is piqued, and he sets out for Asheboro, North Carolina, to ask around. He’s been in town less than twenty-four hours when he meets Kaitlyn Cooper, a doctor and single mom. They both feel an immediate connection; Tanner knows Kaitlyn has a story to tell, and he wants to hear it. To Kaitlyn, Tanner is mysterious, exciting—and possibly leaving in just a few weeks.”
“Meanwhile, nearby, eighty-three-year-old Jasper lives alone in a cabin bordering a national forest. With only his old dog, Arlo, for company, he lives quietly, haunted by a tragic accident that took place decades before. When he hears rumors that a white deer has been spotted in the forest—a creature of legend that inspired his father and grandfather—he becomes obsessed with protecting the deer from poachers.”
Always so much going on in a Sparks novel, but we knew that. His previous adaptations, The Best of Me, The Lucky One, Nights in Rodanthe, A Walk to Remember, and Message in a Bottle all taught us that.
The book is doing quite well. It hit #1 on the New York Times best sellers list. No word on when the movie is being made, but it is something that we admit, we’ll probably follow.
What can we say? We’ll hate watch and we admit it.
