Chicago Fire Season 13, Episode 6 ‘Birds of Prey‘ is a good Severide episode, one that presents him with the type of thing he likes—a challenge. It’s also an illuminating episode for Chief Pascal, who seems to run hot and cold with the people at Firehouse 51 and even with how he wants to handle things with people outside of Firehouse 51.
But the episode is a particularly strong hour for Carver, not because he’s doing well or because he’s got anything figured out, but because he doesn’t and it seems like he’s finally reaching the point where he realizes that. Next, do something about it. Overall, however, this is just a so-so hour of the show. Nothing to complain about, but also nothing to write home about. Onto the next.

WHY DO I KEEP HITTING MYSELF WITH A HAMMER?

Carver in Chicago Fire Season 13, Episode 6 ‘Birds of Prey’ reminds me of this saying, and I’m not sure it even ‘feels so good when he stops.’ He’s clearly trying to bury his feelings and Tori provides a great way to do that, and he knows he’s backsliding, knows that what he keeps on doing is not good for him, that he’s letting people down… and yet he keeps on doing it. Sometimes it’s hard to stop doing things that are bad for you, even when you know they’re bad for you.
There’s a lot to unpack there about self-worth and Carver, and the show doesn’t even come close to truly addressing the subject. But of course, the fact that we even get to see his downward spiral means something, because the show wouldn’t be going there if they weren’t going to address it.
Violet was part of it, yes, but this isn’t all about Violet. It can’t be. So what’s really going on with Carver? What traumas have been unearthed? And how does Tori play into it? Because the fact that he refuses to let her go must mean something. We don’t have the answers, only more questions. But the more questions a show asks the more sure we can be that there will indeed be answers at some point soon.

NOBODY KNOWS DOM PASCAL

We’re once again back in the same place with Pascal, who seems like a great guy in one episode, and a suspicious guy in the next. What’s his deal? Is he a good politician? A guy who always wants to get the truth? Is he both? And will he ever truly fit in at Firehouse 51 if he can’t show anyone his true self? If he can’t trust anyone with his plans? The only thing we know for sure is the answer to that last question, and it’s a very firm no.
He’s been very weird with Stella from the beginning. He clashes with Severide in this hour. He still seems to like Herrmann, who is absent this hour, but who knows how long that will last. And sure, he ends up trusting Severide at the end of this episode, but only when Severide forces his hand. The problem, of course, is that he’s now going to work with Severide. And we know how Severide is, he won’t let go. He’ll be on this like a moth on flame. That is usually something we love about him. We’re not so sure Pascal will love it as much as we do.

- Carver WTF. Stella is going to murder you. And you’re going to deserve it.
- Stella’s like you want the work, do the work Kelly.
- Why is Pascal so weird about Stella? I hope this is something they’re going to address because whyyyy.
- I love how in firefighter shows cops are the bad guys.
- Okay, I don’t get Pascal being so hot and cold.

- Mouch’s storyline is hilarious. HILARIOUS.
- Pascal is a politician. I get it. I hate it.
- Stella and Violet, I love it. I love it. I loooove it.
- Pascal is so shady and I think he’s trying to catch the other guy in something shady but he’s still shady himself.
- That Kelly goes to talk to Stella is my favorite thing about this hour.
- “Don’t plan on coming back unless you get yourself together.”
- Severide’s got nerve, I gotta give him that.
- Of course, Severide is in. Severide is always in for dangerous stuff. When is the midseason finale again?
