We love a good Romance. And we’ve got a soft spot for a coming-of-age Romance. That’s why the upcoming Romance film Bloom has us excited, especially because Yara Shahidi is involved.
According to Deadline, Shahidi is set to star in the Romance film alongside Kedar Williams-Stirling (Sex Education) and Keith Powers (Uglies). The film, which Cole Swanson wrote, is set to be his feature debut and is about a young and gifted Black artist named Ace (Williams-Stirling) who embarks on a profound journey of self-discovery after moving to Italy on a university scholarship. In his time there, he forges unexpected friendships and ignites a passionate romance, all within the captivating orbit of a defiant and opulent circle of wealthy young Black adults deemed “The Casa Rosa Kids.”
They had this writer at “Defiant and opulent wealthy young Black adults.” Who am I kidding? They had me at “Yara Shahidi.” Not only am I thrilled about this casting, but I am also delighted that we are getting a story like this one that features Black actors as the stars. This is a rarity. And to have the story take place in a luxurious place like Tuscany is even better. Per the Deadline article, Bloom has been “described as Love Jones in Italy, featuring super rich Black kids navigating a steamy love triangle.” Can we please have this film now?
Renée Elise Goldsberry (Hamilton, Girls5eva) is also set to star in Bloom. Right now, we don’t know much about any characters other than Williams-Stirling’s’ Ace. We don’t care, though. What we have so far is plenty, and we will be seated for more news as it comes.
