We’re confused. Seriously, we’re confused. How are we supposed to buy the fact that Joey King is supposed to be ugly? Or Chase Stokes for that matter? It confuses us.
The adaptation of the book of the same name by Scott Westerfeld was adapted for the screen by Jacob Forman, Vanessa Taylor, and Whit Anderson.
Joey King has long loved the story. She told TUDUM that her passion for the story has never changed and that she has long wanted to play Tally. She was home sick one day when her older sister gave her the book to read.
“She was like, ‘Just read the first chapter and if you don’t wanna continue, then you don’t have to,’ ” King recalled to the outlet.
She ended up falling head first into the book and continued by saying, “I was like, ‘I wanna play Tally Youngblood someday.'”

If you aren’t familiar with the story it is about, UGLIES tells the story of, “Tally is about to turn sixteen, and she can’t wait. In just a few weeks she’ll have the operation that will turn her from a repellent ugly into a stunningly attractive pretty. And as a pretty, she’ll be catapulted into a high-tech paradise where her only job is to have fun. But Tally’s new friend Shay isn’t sure she wants to become a pretty. When Shay runs away, Tally learns about a whole new side of the pretty world—and it isn’t very pretty. The authorities offer Tally a choice: find her friend and turn her in, or never turn pretty at all. Tally’s choice will change her world forever.”
