As her stress levels increase, Matty considers leaving Jacobson Moore in Matlock Season 1, Episode 6, “Sixteen Steps.” Written by Sara Rose Feinberg and directed by Kat Coiro, this episode features a case involving a tragic death from contaminated baby formula. Olympia appears tuned into how this case may affect Matty in the episode’s promo video. The former even encourages the latter to “sit this one out” if Matty needs to do so.
Olympia’s consideration comes after the class-action case that hits exceptionally close to home for Matty in Matlock Season 1, Episode 5, “Claws.” However, like with Matlock Season 1, Episode 4, “The Rabbit and the Hawk,” Matty wants to use her personal experiences, or at least as much as she’s willing to reveal to the team, as fuel to help other people seek justice. In the promo video, she tells Olympia, “I’d like to help the parents get justice.”

But that’s not the only impact of “Claws” on “Sixteen Steps.” The promo video shows the consequences of the previous episode’s cliffhanger. The man who matched with Matty on the dating app (Remember when Billy made her that profile with good intentions?) meets up with her. It’s hard to tell if it’s at or near Jacobson Moore, but if it is, that could be bad for Matty’s disguise. After all, this man recognizes her as Madeline Kingston – not Matty Matlock.
The promo video shows Matty calling Edwin about the man recognizing her, and Olympia overhears that someone has found Matty. Perhaps Olympia will be too preoccupied to ask that many questions. After all, the investigation featured in Matlock Season 1, Episode 6, “Sixteen Steps,” will provide some insight into what led to Olympia and Julian’s divorce. After the last episode, which shows how well Olympia and Julian work together in their professional and personal lives, seeing the other side of their dynamic will be interesting.
MORE: Kathy Bates has shared that Matlock will be her final role before retirement. Read more about her decision here.
Synopsis:
As Olympia and Julian get a second shot at a case regarding a tragic death due to contaminated baby formula, their past work on the investigation gives glimpses into what led to their divorce. Also, Matty’s overwhelming stress causes her to consider quitting.
