There is something special about Stephanie Hsu. From the moment that you see her, you just know that she’s meant to be a star. She’s got that thing. That thing that you really can’t define, but it’s there and makes you know – she’s going to be a star.
Her mere presence is intimidating, but also somehow calming. She smiles and you know that she’s just going to be chill and talk to you like you’re her bestie. It’s always nice to feel at ease in an interview.
Hsu plays Ruby in LAID. Ruby is a lot, but she doesn’t realize it. She’s having to deal with the fact that all her exes are dying. She’s got to tell them what is happening and hope that they believe her.
LAID is a unique show – one that I thought would be my worst nightmare – but it’s actually one that I could not stop laughing over and finding the humor in. It’s such a great movie that is brought to life with a great cast!
When we asked Hsu about why she wanted to do LAID, she had a great answer, ” I think it’s exactly what you said, the premise is so wild that you’re like, “Gosh, I really would never want to do that,” and I could only want to do that if I were to tell a story or act in it as opposed to be actually in that reality. The premise is so wild that it just felt like a roller coaster that you just want to surrender into.”
She continued, “Also for me, I love romcoms. I really do. I was such a sucker for them growing up and I have all sorts of philosophical theories about why romcoms are having a hard time in this era or there’s not the sort of tentpole romcoms of our generation. I think it’s because love has changed shape, or the nature of finding love has changed shape. I think that it took a twisted premise to be able to ask some of those questions like what is love and how do you know when you know, and how does one figure it out?”
I loved speaking with her. You can see the interview below –
LAID is streaming now on Peacock.
