Here we go!
Trust Tested in The Rookie Season 7 Episode 2 ‘The Watcher’

The conflict between Celina and Nolan is one of the main axes of The Rookie Season 7 Episode 2 ‘The Watcher.’ Celina is on her plain clothes day, so she has to make the tough decisions during her shift, while Nolan is only supposed to be there to intervene if a situation gets out of hand but, for all intents and purposes, Celina is alone…or should be.
Celina finds herself in a somewhat complex situation but one that she definitely has under control, however, Nolan doesn’t let her continue and intervenes. And suddenly we remember why Nolan gets on our nerves. This intervention was unnecessary, it undermined Celina’s authority, and most importantly, it showed that he doesn’t trust her to handle the kind of tense, ever-changing situations that, as a cop, she’s going to face every day. And that’s a problem.
As Celina tells Nolan in The Rookie Season 7 Episode 2 ‘The Watcher,’ Nolan should be there to support her, to help her, not to make things harder for her. As a woman, and to make matters worse, a woman of color, everyone is waiting for her to fail, everyone is waiting for a white man to give the orders. And Nolan isn’t helping her by taking control without letting her react, grow, and prove herself, he’s behaving like them. Luckily, Nolan understands this and leaves Celina alone for the rest of the day, but it’s clear that he needs to improve as a TO.

Committing to the Program

Tim and Lucy discover some secrets about their rookies that put them in a dilemma in The Rookie Season 7 Episode 2 ‘The Watcher.’ For his part, Tim discovers that Miles is sleeping in his car and — although we don’t like him — his reaction is excessively harsh and unfair. He is right that this situation is dangerous, but what about his empathy? No one lives in their car because they want to. If Miles is in that situation, some serious problem must have led him there and perhaps that problem hasn’t yet been solved.
Also, finding a house is not as simple as snapping your fingers; if Miles could have found a house in such a short time, he would have done so already. Instead of threatening him, Tim should have helped him, and guided him to find a solution, just as Celina did. But leaving Miles to his own devices is not behaving like the great TO that Tim thinks he is.
On the other hand, Lucy faces a similar dilemma with Seth in The Rookie Season 7 Episode 2 ‘The Watcher.’ He shows up late and Lucy can’t believe he shows so little interest in the program that he doesn’t show up on time on his second day. Plus, Lucy is afraid that his sweet, calm, kind ways have something to do with it. Maybe Seth doesn’t respect her authority? So Lucy finds her inner Bradford and gets serious with Seth to show him that he shouldn’t mistake her positive teaching method for weakness.
However, Lucy was wrong about Seth. He had cancer and he was afraid he had relapsed, so he made a quick doctor’s appointment. And that changes everything, but at the same time, nothing. Yes, what’s happening to Seth sucks, but as Lucy tells him, he’s on the program to have all his energy focused on it. To get through the program, and not only that, to get through a work shift, Seth needs all his focus on the mission, he can’t afford to be distracted because if he is, someone could get hurt…or killed.

Flirting is the Chenford Language in The Rookie Season 7 Episode 2 ‘The Watcher’

We have to talk about that great little Chenford moment in The Rookie Season 7 Episode 2 ‘The Watcher’! While it wasn’t a date as such, it felt close enough to one, sharing their day-to-day, keeping an eye on each other…although the bet is there, everything takes a backseat, it’s just an excuse to be there, close. What is clear is that they have returned to that way of flirting so much without even realizing it, the way they look at each other when they think the other isn’t looking, the smiles… they are getting closer.
Getting closer is the first step towards reconciliation. Getting closer is a first step to healing the wounds enough to, in the future, be prepared to talk about their relationship and what is to come for them.
They have not yet had a sincere conversation about what happened, about where they are now, and where they want to be in the future, but they have not let each other go either. So they are slowly getting to the point where they can be honest about what they hope to be in the future without being overwhelmed by the pain of what happened.
The Rookie Season 7 airs Tuesdays at 10 pm on ABC.
