Debuting in 2015, Until Dawn tells the story of eight friends who are trapped together on a remote mountain retreat. The thing is, they aren’t alone and there is something out there hunting them. It’s ultimately a game of choice and the butterfly effect in video game form. And now that we’re getting a movie adaptation, and a first look, there’s one really familiar face present: Dr. Hill.
Played by Peter Stormare, Dr. Hill was your guide through Until Dawn. He was a psychiatrist who helped you understand your choices in these therapy style sessions. And not only did Stormare voice Dr. Hill, he was also the actor who took part in the motion capture for the character. So seeing him in the Until Dawn movie preview from Sony Pictures as “Hill” is a welcome easter egg for fans of the video game.
Stormare has been in the entertainment industry since 1978. Notable performances include playing Satan in Keanu Reeves Constantine, Gaear Grimsrud in Fargo, and Abram in John Wick 2. He’s also done plenty of voice work, some for games like Destiny 1 & 2, The Elder Scrolls, and The Secret World. And in the preview for the movie adaptation he’s seen wearing a trucker hat and a unkempt beard, which is very different from his clean cut video game character design.
Gary Dauberman, who was the screenwriter for It Chapter Two and The Nun, appeared in the Until Dawn preview that showed Stormare’s “Hill” character. He went on to explain how he thought a lot about how they could continue the story told by the video game. Director David F. Sandberg also added the biggest twist to this adaptation: when you die in the movie, you just restart, something that is different from the game.
