Move over, Ted Lasso. It’s Isla Gordon’s world now.
In fairness, Kate Hudson’s role in Netflix’s sports comedy from Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz, and David Stassen isn’t a coach, but she is in charge. Running Point follows Hudson’s Isla Gordon as she steps up as the president of the Los Angeles Wave after a scandal forces her brother to resign. The series that promises to put “a bold new twist on the underdog comedy” was announced by Netflix in May 2024. The streamer announced that the show will premiere all 10 episodes of its debut season on Thursday, February 27.
Of course, there are still reports that Ted Lasso Season 4 is in the works at Apple TV+. There is enough room in fans’ hearts for both sports-related series. Still, it’s exciting to anticipate a sports comedy with a female lead. It’s one of the reasons why Ted Lasso would benefit from a Rebecca Welton and Keeley Jones-centric spinoff series. Nevertheless, Running Point will follow the “ambitious and often overlooked” Isla as she proves to everyone, including her family, that she is the right person to manage “one of the most storied basketball franchises.”

The series finds its home on Netflix, which continues to prove it’s the best streamer for sports entertainment. The comedy also marks Kaling’s first TV show on Netflix since the coming-of-age comedy series Never Have I Ever ended in 2023. Kaling shared Running Point’s key art on Instagram with the caption, “We have a date.” The post also ran on the Instagram of Kaling’s production company, Kaling International. The company produces Running Poing in association with Warner Bros. Television, where Kaling has an overall deal.
Additionally, Kaling writes and executive produces the series alongside Ike Barinholtz and David Stassen. All three worked together on the romantic comedy series The Mindy Project – Kaling and Barinholtz starred in it, too. Stassen is Running Point’s showrunner. Kate Hudson, Howard Klein (3 Arts Entertainment), Jeanie Buss, and Linda Rambis executive produce the series, with Jordan Rambis producing.
Netflix’s Tudum has released character descriptions for the ensemble, including Brenda Song’s role as Ali Lee. She is “the Waves’ intimidating chief of staff,” who “understands the politics surrounding the Gordon family, having known Isla since they shared a dorm room in college.” The comedy also stars Drew Tarver, Scott MacArthur, Fabrizio Guido, Toby Sandeman, Chet Hanks, Jay Ellis, Max Greenfield, Keyla Monterroso Mejia, Roberto Sanchez, Uche Agada, and Dane DiLiegro. Some of whom are in the first photos of Running Point.
