We’re back! The Rookie Season 7 Episode 7 ‘The Mickey’ is a key episode in which all the couples on the show take a step forward and decide whether to stay together or split up. This makes Bailey and Nolan, along with Nyla and James, work on their issues, while Chenford moves towards their reconciliation. Ready?
Here we go!
Working It Out Together

Bailey and Nolan are one of the undisputed protagonists of The Rookie Season 7 Episode 7 ‘The Mickey.’ Nolan wants to convince himself that it’s not over, but the truth is that he doesn’t know how to find a solution either… and he doesn’t know how to know if it’s true that it’s all over. But, as Tim tells him, the only way to know is to try. As for Bailey, her new friend makes her see something she wasn’t seeing: she suffered abuse and her trauma made her react extremely, but Nolan can’t understand it if she doesn’t explain it to him.
We love that this episode made it clear that abuse isn’t just physical. There are many types of abuse, and one of them is psychological. Jason never laid a hand on Bailey, but he kept yelling at her, humiliating her, belittling her, undervaluing her, controlling her, and harassing her. That’s abuse, and it left Bailey with trauma that she silenced for years because she couldn’t name what happened to her, precisely because it didn’t fit the usual image of abuse that we all have in our brains. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t. Denial isn’t working for Bailey anymore because it’s costing her happiness and the life she worked so hard to build.
So Bailey realizes in The Rookie Season 7 Episode 7 ‘The Mickey’ that she needs to be honest with Nolan and explain why she did what she did and why she felt the need to do it. If she doesn’t, he’ll never be able to understand her. So Bailey gathers her courage and explains to Nolan the fear she felt knowing that Jason was free. Siding with Malvado was an act of self-defense, the only thing she found to make sure Jason could never hurt her again. Nolan understands her and the best thing is that he apologizes for making her feel judged. He didn’t mean to but it’s clear that Bailey felt that way and that’s the last thing Nolan wanted. They’re going to get through this. Together.

Finding Solutions

As for Chenford, they haven’t shared a single scene and yet they made much more progress in The Rookie Season 7 Episode 7 ‘The Mickey’ than in the previous episode. While in the previous episode what happened didn’t change anything, in this episode we do see changes leading to a reconciliation. In this episode we see Tim continue to go to therapy — something that was about time the show addressed — and we also see him vent about everything that happened with Lucy. He’s aware that sleeping with her was a mistake and he also regrets how everything ended between them.
As he confides to Nolan, Tim regrets not fighting for Lucy, not letting them figure it out together, not even trying, and just walking away. And now he’s working on fixing that…and on being more emotionally accessible. Tim is working on being ready to get back with Lucy. In the meantime, he was finding his place, a way to stay in her life and get closer to her, a way to get back to how they were before they were together…which is why it bothers him even more that he took the easy way out and slept with her when he wasn’t ready. Now, Lucy is going to be trying to avoid him, and being around each other will feel like they’re walking on eggshells. It’s like going back to square one.
But the truth is, it’s not. Sleeping together is a mistake they both made, but Tim, as we see in The Rookie Season 7 Episode 7 ‘The Mickey,’ is still working on healing all of his wounds. What happened with Lucy doesn’t change that. They’ll get over this bump and have that familiarity again. As for Tim, there will come a time when he will be emotionally ready to get back with Lucy and not make the same mistakes again. He just has to hope that Lucy will take him back. And we are sure that she will!

Necessary Changes

Another couple that finally addresses their issues in The Rookie Season 7 Episode 7 ‘The Mickey’ is Nyla and James. We have to say that James is right: they can’t keep going like this. It makes sense that Nyla can’t stand having to explain herself as if she were the spokesperson for the entire LAPD. Nyla feels like she has to continually take a morality test with her husband and his friends every day. And that’s not fair. James just wants to help the community and improve the system…but he doesn’t realize that he’s putting a burden on Nyla that doesn’t belong to her.
Because of that situation, Nyla prefers to run away from home to avoid a bigger fight. She doesn’t have the energy. But James is right that that’s not the solution, they have to talk things out and try to work it out together. Nyla is aware of that and tries, she really tries, but when they start fighting again, it overwhelms her and she just walks away. Nyla runs away again and that doesn’t solve anything at all. In the end, Wesley is the one who holds the key. Nyla and James agree that the system needs to change and improve, the key is to focus on that. Work together to try to make that change. But, of course, running away from the problem instead of confronting it is not the answer.
Luckily, in The Rookie Season 7, Episode 7 ‘The Mickey’ Nyla manages to find a middle ground. She and James may not agree on the details, but they do agree on the change they need to make. So the first step is to try to change things, to have both sides of the conflict listen to each other. They will cross the rest of the bridges when they get to them, but now, they can work on this together.

Lack of Trust

As for Lucy, she realized that parenting is not easy in The Rookie Season 7 Episode 7 ‘The Mickey.’ She doesn’t trust Seth at all and doesn’t want him around Tamara. In the end, no one would want their daughter to date a compulsive liar. While Lucy is more of an older sister to Tamara than a mother by age, she did provide a roof for her and made sure Tamara could study and follow her dreams without having to worry about anything else, just like a mother would.
In that context, Lucy is overprotective of Tamara and doesn’t want someone she doesn’t trust to get close to her. The problem is that Tamara is an adult and has to make her own mistakes, so Lucy can’t forbid her from being with Seth, especially if she doesn’t explain why.
That said, it’s clear that Lucy doesn’t trust Seth. He stays on the program because she doesn’t have the heart to kick him out after his cancer comes back, but Lucy isn’t stupid and realizes it is too much of a coincidence. However, despite their lack of trust, in The Rookie Season 7, Episode 7 ‘The Mickey’ Lucy had to stand up for him and accept him getting involved in an undercover mission. But the truth is that she doesn’t think he’s ready for something like that. And she’s right.
In the end, Lucy managed to keep Seth out of trouble but that doesn’t mean he did it right. If he had listened to Lucy and not risked asking for more drugs, he wouldn’t have been in danger. And this is another thing that makes Lucy see that Seth doesn’t belong in the program. This lack of trust between them is a problem that is going to get bigger and will explode later for sure. When they are on a call, they need to trust each other, if that fails, they are both in danger. We’ll see what happens with this.
