NCIS: Sydney Season 2, Episode 6 ‘Hell Weak‘ is a great episode that builds on the tension steadily, feeds you information at a really good pace, and almost as importantly, packs quite a punch at the end.
This week, the emotional impact isn’t carried by J.D. and Mackey, but by Evie and DeShawn, especially by a DeShawn who has gotten to be the support, the partner, the rock for Evie more than he has gotten to be the man at the center of the story. If ‘Hell Weak’ proves anything, though, is that he’s more than capable of being just that and that he can carry an episode. But it also proves that, when they need to, DeShawn and Evie can be quite the team. In fact, they can even survive the Hunger Games together.

I QUIT

Even though NCIS: Sydney Season 2, Episode 6 ‘Hell Weak’ doesn’t give us the full story of DeShawn and the SEALS, it does prove that he didn’t just “quit” in the way he puts it, in the way he’s clearly ashamed of. There’s a deeper story there, one that’s not about DeShawn giving up because things got too hard. But there’s reality and there’s our perception of it. And sometimes the two don’t go hand in hand.
In fact, sometimes our fears and our anxieties have a habit of coming out in our worst moments. That’s why they’re called fears and anxieties. If they only came out when they wouldn’t really bother us, perhaps they’d have another name! So of course, when faced with all these actual SEALs, there’s a moment where DeShawn feels both comforted by having people who understand him and like he doesn’t truly stack up.
By the end of the hour, though, it feels like DeShawn is at least a little more comfortable, if not in how he sees himself, in how others see him. And the rest of the story we will surely explore further. This show has already proven it won’t leave stones unturned when it comes to the backstories of these characters.

THE HUNGER GAMES

Evie and DeShawn come out on the other end of what feels like the literal Hunger Games on NCIS: Sydney Season 2, Episode 6 ‘Hell Weak’ alive, and for a second there, even that feels like a win. They’re chased through the woods by a group of SEALs with a lot more firepower than they have and hunted for sport, and they make it because they’re a team, as simple as that. They’ve got a plan, they trust each other and they know how to work together.
It’s an over-simplification, of course. They get a little help and Mackey and J.D. get there at the perfect time, but the episode also showcases what you can do when you’ve got the right partner by your side. This is a show that focuses on a lot of people in law enforcement, a lot of people who have gone through the army, and they’re all very much used to relying on others. But there’s being part of a team and there’s finding your team. Your partner. The difference feels very much obvious in this hour.
For DeShawn and Evie, it’s also how the right partner is not just the person who is there for you like they are for each other in this hour, to get out of a jam. The right partner is also the one who’s there to joke with you. The one who’s there to watch movies with you. The one who’s there to run with you, or to get on a scooter while you run, either works. Or maybe, the one who can get mad in your stead, and also remember to call you out when they think you’re wrong.

Things I think I think:
- Mackey sure killed that teddy bear fast.
- “Wait till I tell you about Thor?”
- J.D. and Evie are having more fun than anyone this season.
- “I quit.”
- DeShawn and Mackey going hard with the word partner this season.
- Evie looks like she’s gonna punch anyone who makes fun of her partner. Only she can make fun of her partner!
- Blue you’re such a Gen Zer.
- DeShawn and Mackey having a code! My heart.
- “Or what, you’ll shoot us?”
- “What is this, the Hunger Games?”
- I thought we were gonna get the full DeShawn story about why he quit this episode, and though a part of me is glad that means this is something they’re going to revisit, a part of me is sad we didn’t.
- Also, you deserved that J.D. You did!
- Love me some J.D. and Mackey banter.
