Penn Badgley is tapping into his inner Gossip Girl in new promo material ahead of YOU season 5. Spoiler alert, but in the OG Gossip Girl series that ran from 2007-2012, it was revealed that Badgley’s character Dan Humphrey was the titular “gossip girl” that blogged the lives of a bunch of wealthy teenagers. And the actor who narrated the voiced “gossip girl” was Kristen Bell in the same way that Dame Julie Andrews voices Lady Whistledown on Bridgerton.
Now, Badgley is turning the tables on Bell by narrating a scene from her show Nobody Wants This with Adam Brody. Well technically not Badgley. He’s pretending to be his YOU character Joe Goldberg as he narrates an icecream scene between Bell’s Joanne and Brody’s Noah. And it’s as unhinged as you would expect when it comes to the character who thinks he’s every woman’s knight in shining armor when he’s… not.
As Noah goes on about some woman Badgley’s Joe laments “Was that supposed to make me feel better?” Noah continues with the complements about this mysterious woman and as Joanne’s face tenses he says, “I don’t think this situation calls for the bigger person, but I guess I’ll oblige.” And he follows it up in typical Joe Goldberg by saying, “I know the friend zone is usually a cold, dark place suitable for frozen delicacies to bury your feelings in by the shovelful, but Joanne, this is torture.”
