Trust Your Calling in The Rookie Season 7 Episode 13 ‘Three Billboards’

Miles overcomes a trial by fire in The Rookie Season 7 Episode 13 ‘Three Billboards.’ He imagined a very different life. Miles thought he’d have a successful career playing football… but instead ended up as a rookie in the LAPD and living in his car. So when he runs into an old friend who has exactly the life Miles envisioned for himself, it’s inevitable he’ll have mixed feelings. On one hand, Miles loves what he does and wouldn’t trade it for anything. But on the other hand, he lives in his car, and his friend has a luxurious mansion and drives a Ferrari. Who wouldn’t want to live like that?
But, like everything in life, all that glitters isn’t gold. Miles’s friend doesn’t have material needs, but he does have emotional ones. After all, he even allows himself to be robbed to keep his house full of people, so he can feel like he’s not alone and that someone cares about him. Even though he knows they only see a dollar sign when they look at him and that they’re attracted to the money and the fun, not him. And that’s immensely sad. But Miles is different. He does care about him, and he’s proven he knows how to watch his back.
That’s why Miles’s friend doesn’t think twice about offering him a job on The Rookie Season 7 Episode 13 ‘Three Billboards.’ And it’s truly such a generous offer that Miles hesitates to accept it. He’s about to. But then, he has to spring into action when everything goes wrong, and he’s a natural at it. He’s a good cop. He was born to do it, and, as Tim tells him, taking the job would be a waste of his talent.
Still, Miles remains hesitant because that lifestyle, everything he’d have… is so tempting. However, Tim hits the nail on the head, telling him that that lifestyle will never be his, but his friend’s. In that job, Miles would witness others enjoying those luxuries, and yes, he would benefit from some of them, but they would never be his. And that’s the easy way out.
Miles would be throwing away all his true talent in exchange for borrowed luxuries and a lifestyle. It’s his decision, but Tim couldn’t be more right in The Rookie Season 7 Episode 13 ‘Three Billboards.’ And Miles knows it. His friend’s lifestyle may be tempting, especially for someone currently living in his car, but it’s not his calling. And we’re really proud of him for this!

True Friendship

Lucy knows something is wrong with Rachel in The Rookie Season 7 Episode 13 ‘Three Billboards.’ And while we appreciate that she always turns to Tim and trusts him when she needs advice, we agree that he’s not the right person to talk to Rachel. We understand where Lucy is coming from. She’s Rachel’s best friend, and it’s clear that Rachel doesn’t want to talk to her. She’s been avoiding her. But because of their shared past, Rachel trusts Tim. Maybe she’ll open up to him and tell him what’s going on.
Lucy is desperate to help Rachel, and she doesn’t know how. It’s just that an ex-boyfriend isn’t the best option to figure out what’s going on with her. Lucy knows Tim is right, she just doesn’t know what else to do. She’s tried to give Rachel space so she could tell her what’s going on when she’s ready. However, that’s not working. So when Miles calls and tells her what situation Rachel is in, she doesn’t hesitate to come to her aid.
At this point in The Rookie Season 7 Episode 13 ‘Three Billboards,’ Lucy is determined to talk to Rachel face to face. Rachel may not want or be able to talk to her, but she needs to talk to someone. Keeping everything she feels inside is destroying her from the inside out. And Lucy is her best friend, so she’s not going to allow it. She’s going to protect her, even from herself. Finally, Rachel tells her what’s been going on, and what she’s been feeling, and she completely breaks down.
She’s been going from party to party, having drink after drink, just to stop thinking, to dissociate, and not feel sad. To momentarily forget the existence of the void that Rachel feels is swallowing her whole without her being able to stop it. As always, Lucy is there for her. Holding her and comforting her. She’s going to be by her side, and Rachel has her no matter what. Always.

First Responders

Nolan and Bailey aren’t having a good time either in The Rookie Season 7 Episode 13 ‘Three Billboards.’ While the billboards accusing Nolan of corruption aren’t helping, the real problem is their jobs. They’ve been through very dangerous situations, and their daily lives involve being on the front lines of that danger.
But is that really a problem? A police officer and a firefighter can’t possibly adopt a child? Seriously? Well, we don’t agree, nor do we think it’s fair. And yes, indeed, they wouldn’t have much family support, but Nyla, Wesley, and Angela would be there to help. Even Lucy, Tim, and Celina. Their chosen family. They’d all support them, and Bailan would make it work. We’re sure of that.
However, The Rookie Season 7 Episode 13 ‘Three Billboards’ doesn’t seem to agree with us. In the end, it seems clear that they have to decide whether to continue pursuing their passions or sacrifice them to adopt. But the point is, they love what they do. Their jobs are part of who they are, they’re their calling. They can’t push them away because they’d be giving up a part of themselves.
So that’s not an option… and they have to let go of the idea of adoption. And it hurts. It hurts like hell because they want a child. We’re sad for them. It’s not fair! Mentoring will help, but it won’t fill that void. It won’t replace the child they’ll never have. That’s something they both need to be very clear about…

Other Stuff
- We love that Miles is so honest and has such a good heart.
- And caring enough about Rachel to know he had to call Lucy was the chef’s kiss.
- Liam was the one who put up the billboards. WTF?!
- Bailey and Nolan are in danger at their jobs and have had somewhat hectic lives, yes, but they’re first responders, and that’s part of the job and part of everyday life. Other first responders are also parents. And good ones. We don’t think it’s fair that their jobs eliminate their chances of adopting. We said what we said.
- Celina’s boyfriend is a sweetheart, but those speakers were definitely too big.
- And yes, Celina was right to make it clear that they’re not at that point in their relationship where they’re finally living together.
- Those were really a lot of calls at work, though.
- Lucy and Celina always have each other’s backs; we love them! We need more of them! Please and thank you.
- And also much more of Lucy and Rachel. They’re BFFs!
- Where’s our usual Chenford scene? We miss them!
