NCIS: Sydney Season 2, Episode 8 ‘Blood Is Thicker Than Vodka‘ is another fun hour, filled with tiny moments of character development and good team dynamics. In a procedural, sometimes, that’s a great episode. Sure, this doesn’t exactly do anything big, but it’s hard to ask the show to pick up on the one big dangling plot thread from the premiere two episodes from the finale, and other than that, what else is the show gonna do but hone in on the character dynamics?
And in that regard, the show has delivered win after win after win. It’s given characters their individual moments, it’s furthered the relationships between the partners, and it’s even made sure to hammer in the importance of these six people as a team. Even in this episode, the banter regarding who is afraid is both widespread enough to involve everyone and very localized to J.D. and Mackey & Evie and DeShawn because there are team jokes and then there are partner jokes.

I’M JUST GETTING STARTED

In that regard, NCIS: Sydney Season 2, Episode 8 ‘Blood Is Thicker Than Vodka’ does actually take the banter next level as J.D. and Mackey take turns embarrassing each other, and I’m going to be honest, I think J.D. might have lost this one. A goth phase? We’ve kinda all been there. Those bangs? Did you also audition for a boy band, J.D.? And the
But the fact that they’re now at a point where they can do this, and do it not just with each other but involving the team as well, is a very good sign for not just their partnership but the team in general, too. These are baby steps, we know, but this is the kind of foundation that will hold. They’ve shared the big stuff, the life-changing stuff. They’ve shared the little, funny, embarrassing things. And they clearly share trust. So when it comes time to take the next step, that will feel easy.

WHAT COMES NEXT?

NCIS: Sydney Season 2, Episode 8 ‘Blood Is Thicker Than Vodka’ doesn’t take any big-picture swings, but it doesn’t really need to. The team is strong enough to make the episode stand on its own, and the dynamics the show has built so far make it work without needing to bring any of the little things the show has established about any of the individual characters back. But, with only two episodes to go in the season, some of the big picture things will have to come up to end the season on a high. Particularly if we think back on how Season 1 ended. Not saying Season 2 has to top it, but I am saying they set a high standard.
So, at least the Rankin thing has to be brought back. And if Rankin does wake up, that brings up J.D.’s son and perhaps even Mackey’s again. Except now, we know so much more about who they are, and their connection is so much stronger than it was the last time we saw this plot point come up. How will that change what’s coming? We don’t know, but we’re going to be honest: we cannot wait to find out. NCIS: Sydney did, after all, throw Evie and DeShawn into mortal peril together twice this season. I’m not saying it’s J.D. and Mackey’s turn, but it kinda is. Just in time for the finale.
