Moms. They have this intuition that no one else has. They know when their baby is in trouble. They know when they are needed and they know when to take a step back. But they come in, ready to intimidate, protect, and crush anyone who stands in their way. In episode 5 of Ransom Canyon, we meet the ultimate alpha mom – Paula Jo.
Now, don’t get me wrong, Paula Jo isn’t the entire story. She’s a piece of Ransom Canyon that is fitting into the puzzle. Paula Jo is fierce, but she’s also going to crush everyone in her way.
Now, am I upset that she’s there? Absolutely not. I think that we needed someone to mix up something, because Davis needs a swift kick. I wasn’t mad that she showed up, because I needed something to crush Davis’ spirit. After all, we were forced to see Davis and Quinn lying in front of the fire after having had sex. Really, really don’t want those two together.
So even though Paula Jo is there, Austin, Water, & Power, I am ready for her to cause all the drama. Small towns have the best drama.

DAVIS IS DAVISING
We get it, Davis got it in. Does she want a round of applause? Probably. Am I giving one? Nope. Not even close. Look, Quinn can do whatever she wants – she’s a grown woman. BUT, even though she’s a fictional character, this writer found myself feeling like I was watching a friend make bad decisions.
Also, when did they move over to the Douglas ranch? What time has passed? I am a little confused by the timeline here.
Even though I do not like Davis, I could appreciate that he tried to be romantic and went to get breakfast. Yet, it’s when he steps out of the house to get breakfast, Paula Jo (his ex) has shown up. She is definitely in charge – walking into the house and stripping down as she heads to take a shower, and runs straight into Quinn.
They’ve seen each other naked, so that was awkward.
Paula Jo wants to talk crap to Quinn. The thing about Quinn is that she isn’t going to give anyone ammunition. Well, except Staten. Him she will go to town to cut him down. So, as Paula Jo says, what she needs to do and Quinn does what Quinn does best.
She walks away.
I did laugh when Davis looked defeated and Quinn told him to go ask her ex what was going on – basically. Him sighing and then having to face Paula Jo … yes! She’s putting him in his place about Austin, Water, & Power. She’s got a seat on the board. No one has faith in Davis.
Now, I will say that it’s not okay for anyone to feel that someone doesn’t have faith in them. So yes, I do feel bad for him. But you reap what you sew.
Paula Jo showing up may also be the push that Davis needs to make up with his son. That’s the most important thing. Especially when he finds out what Reid has done. He’s going to need support.
GRACIES IS FULL
Yancy signing up for rodeo has worried Ellie, and I happen to love that she’s worried. Yes, I know that sounds bad, but it’s more because I want them together, and so if that means that they have to admit worrying and any feelings, I am for it.
I do not know if Yancy is trying to pull a con on Ellie, especially since she’s close to Cap. If he is, I hope that she rakes him over the coals. It’s the way he smiles when he’s next to her for me.
As Quinn and Ellie are talking about what happened at Davis’ – I am going to have to be happy about a few things. The first being that Yancy agrees with Quinn that if Paula Jo walks in the house and gets naked, she and Davis are hooking up. The second thing – the way he manages to make Ellie sarcastic and calm – I applaud.

Everyone is in town for the rodeo, and yes, Yancy is competing. Ellie is scared and worried for him and showsit in her own way. I love those little moments.
Seeing the hall packed is something that I love to see. For Quinn and Ellie, TBH. The two have worked so hard to get here and are going to do whatever they need to for their dreams to come true.
The only thing about Gracie’s (the hall) that I hated was that Freddie showed up to remind Davis about the fact that he needs to win and get him the 20K, or everyone will find out who he is.
PAULA JO IS HERE
Moms. They are dramatic sometimes, but sometimes they are just what we need. Paula Jo is Reid’s Mom, and she’s come into Ransom like a bull in a china shop. She is going to do whatever ot make this happen – the pipeline.
When she shows up to talk to Staten, I find out more than I wanted to. These two had one wild night? Vom.
Austin, Water, & Power wants the ranch, and she’s there to double their original offer, as well as tell him that she got the leaseback extended. But for Staten, that doesn’t matter. He wants to stay in his home.
I wonder why it is that everyone feels the need to try to get to Staten through Quinn. Cause that just seems to be a pattern, but also kinda really cruel. She tells him about Quinn being in Davis’ shower and how she woulda have thought it would have been Statens’ shower.
You can see the anger in his eyes. It’s all mixed with jealousy and chaos. He can claim he doesn’t care, but let’s be honest – he does.
THE RODEO
I have to admit, I love a rodeo. Ransom Canyon moves pretty quickly to get the rodeo, but I am sitting here and just thankful that they gave us a montage of Yancy working out. Give us the goodness. I am not going to complain about that.
Yancy in the rodeo? That does make me nervous. I mean, rodeos in general make me nervous. But he carried off that ride, and I was smiling. Yancy has a lot of issues – yes. But he also has the opportunity to move past them. I am not sure he realizes that.
The thing is, though, Ellie has fallen for him, so there needs to be some sort of honesty here. When she goes to wish him luck, she knows what she’s doing. Finally kissing him – lordy that was intense – was a moment to cheer. My ship has set sail. He made sure that all the viewers believed it too. We saw that a** grab.
Ransom Canyon Season 1, Episode 3 Review: ‘Trouble Can Be Fun Sometimes’
TEENAGE ANGST
Lauren has a complicated love life, and it’s absolutely something I think that a lot of us can relate to. We’ve been there.
Reid and his secrets, though – that is a lot to carry. Watching him be nice to Lucas, I am not sure that he wants to be. I also think that it’s that old saying – keep your friends close, but your enemies closer.
When Lauren and Tim show up at the rodeo, things get a lot more complicated. Tim wants to talk to Reid about the Sheriff asking questions. Reid is trying to calm him down from talking.
On the other hand, Lauren is given an ultimatum. If Lucas is meant to be with her, he tells her that she needs to break it off with Reid. Why? Because neither one of them deserves this.
I do get that Lauren is trying, but I do believe that sometimes trying isn’t enough. You have to put actions into it.
When she finally does break it off with Reid, she is honest. She tells him it’s because of Lucas when he asks. That drives him to walk up to Lucas and punch him in the face, and then walk off.
IT IS TOO LATE
Seeing Davis and Quinn kiss is painful. No one wants to see that. But it is seeing it that makes Staten finally come to terms with what he’s been doing.
Emotions are funny. Why? Well, because we keep them close to our hearts, even when they deserve to be and should be told. For Staten, he’s kept it close to his heart because he believes himself to be broken.
When he tells Quinn that she makes him happy and that he’s pushed her away and he gets that. But he wants to be with her. She asks her not to be with Davis, but to be with him.
All of the words that Quinn wants to hear, but it’s just too late.
CAP FOR THE WIN
Freddie and his crony have told Yancy that he needs to throw the ride and fall off at six seconds. He says no, but then switches his choice, because they threaten Ellie. He really does care about her.
However, what he doesn’t see is that Cap is seeing them threaten him, and he’s going to solve it.
Yancy has choices to make, and I do think that making the choice to stay on the bull was the right one.
With this show, I have stood up a lot and paced my room, nervous about what could be next. When Freddie and his crony find their way to where Yancy is, they are ready to threaten him, but the cops are there.
To arrest them for stealing cattle.
While I was good with that, and thought maybe it would give Yancy a reprieve. Only Fredde makes sure that doubts are put in Ellie’s head. Where will that lead?
Yancy tells Cap that he can explain, but Cap says he doesn’t need to. He just needs to explain where he learned to ride like that. It’s a small request, but something that definitely makes me smile.
Cap tells Yancy that he’s making him proud.
I don’t know what it is, but no matter the television show or movies, when someone says that they are proud, I lose it. I lose it because that is something that all of us want to hear.
And proud is a beautiful thing.
OTHER THOUGHTS
- Lauren seeing Lucas and Reid being friends is awkward, and I think that it’s karma. I also get why it is awkward for her
- I really do hope that Lauren finds some peace, cause seeing her distraught and sad… It’s heartbreaking
- The Sheriff is showing video to Kai.. whens he gonna tell Staten he was right?
- Davis’s offering to take Quinn to New York is the sweetest. Ya, I said something nice about him.
- Lucas and Reid finding the missing cattle wasn’t on my bucket list
- Lucas telling Lauren to break it off with Reid – let’s all clap and stand up and be thankful that he’s standing up for himself.
- STATEN! WHY PJ IN THE CAR! WHAT ARE YOU THINKING!
- I can’t even talk about the ending
