Fans have waited nearly three decades, but the midnight margaritas are finally back on the table. Warner Bros. officially declared that Practical Magic 2, the much-awaited sequel to the 1998 cult favorite, will cast its spell on cinemas on September 18, 2026.
Helmed by Bird Box‘s Susanne Bier and penned by original writer Akiva Goldsman, the movie reunites Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as Sally and Gillian Owens. They are two witch sisters tied by family, trauma, and an undeniable blood bond.
The original Practical Magic, directed by Griffin Dunne and based on Alice Hoffman’s novel, was far from a box office smash when it first released—earning $46.7M globally—but it bewitched a generation.
Its sisterhood, heartbreak, and soft-core witchcraft have only grown in cultural value since. “Tooth of wolf and morning dew, something old and something new,” Kidman intones in the new teaser, confirming that this sequel isn’t a reboot but a continuation.
And with fans like @BellaLoveNote screaming, “Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman just shot up my 2026 anticipated movies list!!” and @CinemaBurst declaring it “midnight margarita time,” the online reaction is electric.
Practical Magic 2 feels like a spell worth recasting

Practical Magic wasn’t just about witches but also the burden of womanhood, legacy, and the power of choosing love in a world that punishes it. That’s the alchemy that still resonates. So when Warner Bros. confirmed via social on May 6, 2025, that Practical Magic 2 was happening, it wasn’t just a sequel announcement. It was a coven reunion.
Director Susanne Bier, who has made a name for herself with emotionally charged dramas such as The Night Manager and international hit Bird Box, is well…familiar with female-led suspense. Her work with Sandra Bullock before this gave Netflix a record 157.4 million worldwide views.
Add Goldsman’s OG touch and producer Denise Di Novi’s vow to People that “The big mistake people make with sequels is when they (…) reinvent the wheel,” and we’re reassured: this is going to feel like home.
Will the plot have a new curse, a new generation, or more of the old magic?

While Warner Bros. has yet to reveal plot details, fans are already lighting their spell candles. Will the Owens sisters face a new generational curse? Will we see the daughters (Kylie and Antonia) all grown up and going through love under the weight of the family’s magical baggage?
Given Hollywood’s current appetite for legacy sequels (think Hocus Pocus 2, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice), a multigenerational twist seems likely. Some fans are already speculating whether Aidan Quinn’s Gary Hallet could return—@sylviastorm2112 summed it up: “Yessss ❤️🔥 But more important: Will Aidan Quinn return?”
Also competing with Practical Magic 2 on September 18, 2026, is Sony’s new Resident Evil film. They have very different fan bases, but the witches may have a secret weapon: nostalgia. If this film has cozy darkness and emotional catharsis, it may enchant both millennials and Gen Z alike.
So, witches, light your black candles and stock up on limes.
