Even though we knew Uma Thurman was going to be in Netflix’s The Old Guard since 2022, it still came as a surprise that she’s going to be the villain of this story.
Based on the graphic novel series written by Greg Rucka and illustrated by Leandro Fernandez, The Old Guard tells the story of a group of immortals and their mission to survive in an ever-evolving world that draws them nearer and nearer to being discovered. They are skilled warriors from various corners of the world, and the bond they form over the centuries is unshakeable. Or seemingly unshakable. And when we enter into this Netflix adventure, a new immortal is discovered and taken into the fold as the world draws closer and closer to their door.
The Old Guard 2 sees Andy (Charlize Theron) and her team of immortal warriors are back, with a renewed sense of purpose in their mission to protect the world as Andy tries to grapple with her newfound mortality. Booker (Matthias Schoenaerts) is still in exile after his betrayal. And Quynh (Veronica Ngô) is out for revenge after escaping her underwater prison.
When a mysterious threat emerges that could jeopardize everything she’s worked towards for thousands of years, Andy, Nile (KiKi Layne), Joe (Marwan Kenzari), Nicky (Luca Marinelli) and James Copley (Chiwetel Ejiofor) enlist the help of Tuah (Henry Golding), an old friend who may provide the key to unlocking the mystery behind immortal existence.
And who is that mysterious threat but Uma Thurman.
“For centuries I’ve watched you fight to protect humanity while forsaking your own kind. I will destroy you and everything you stand for with a power you can’t even imagine yet,” the first of the immortals warns Andy and her team. What follows is this first immortal seemingly freeing Quynh from her watery grave while ignoring that she could’ve stepped up and guided these baby immortals. Instead, she blames them and promises to destroy them.
The trailer for The Old Guard 2 ends with Theron and Thurman getting ready for an epic final showdown. And as a fan of both of these actors, I’m seated.
