Fandom is a weird thing. Why? Well, it’s because it’s so subjective and there is different levels of fandom. There is loving something and then there is taking hair home that they gave you from a scene where the star of the show cuts their hair off.
It’s a thing.
In todays time, giving away your DNA is probably something that wouldn’t happen. But back in the day, after shooting a pivotal scene in Boy Meets World, where Topanga cut her hair.
On the Pod Meets World podcast (which is a Boy Meets World rewatch podcast) Danielle Fishel and her co-hosts Rider Strong and Will Friedle recalled what happened way back with the season four episode of the show titled “Hair Today, Goon Tomorrow.”
The one where Daneille Fishel cut her hair. In the episode, Topanga wants to prove to Cory that looks didn’t matter. If you remember the episode, it was shocking to see Fishel’s hair cut. Her signature long locks were part of her identity.
“I really did cut my hair. It was not a wig. It was definitely my hair,” Fishel said before adding, “I had really wanted to cut my hair. I had only had one haircut in my entire life and it was when I was 2. I had hair down to my butt from the time I was 2, and my hair at the end had little ringlet curls. My mom at one point decided I needed a trim and they just cut off those ringlet curls, and then I never had another haircut until that time I cut my hair on TV.”
Fishel had wanted to cut her hair and had been met with resistance from production. She explained, “It was gonna be my first adult haircut. I asked and Michael said at first, ‘No, absolutely not. No, no, no.'”
She added, “And I continued, I persisted. And then he said, ‘Okay, at least let me write an episode about it.'”
Of course – why not capitalize on it.
The episode was filmed in front of a live studio audience (yes, that used to happen) and there were some debates on how much Fishel would cut. With Fishel having all the power though, because the scissors were in her hands, debates didn’t really matter. She could do what she wanted, but was a rule follower. She did what was asked of her when cutting her hair for the cameras.
The weirdest part to us? Well that would be that they actually handed out her hair after she cut it. Yes, handed out locks of her hair.
“Also, you’ll be surprised to know: We gave out pieces of my hair to the audience after,” Fishel added on the podcast.
What would you do if you went to a taping of a television show and they gave you locks of hair? How would you feel? Would you take it?
