The Buccaneers Season 2 has already brought a lot of romantic twists for Theo, the Duke of Tintagel, and Guy Thwarte. While the period drama’s first season hinged on a love triangle featuring both characters and Nan St. George, the sophomore season broke that structure open. The characters’ lives became even more complicated. Nan must save her sister, so Guy tried to move on with Paloma, a new character he met when moving to Italy with Jinny and her son, Freddie. Meanwhile, Theo and Lizzy Elmsworth, Nan’s friend, realized they have feelings for each other while Lizzy is engaged to another man, Hector Robinson.
Fangirlish sat down with Guy Remmers (Theo) and Matthew Broome (Guy) ahead of The Buccaneers Season 2, Episode 1, “The Duchess of Tintagel.” In our exclusive interview, the two actors discussed their characters’ romances, potential futures beyond this season, and whether or not Guy and Theo’s friendship is repairable. But before the conversation turned to those topics, Remmers and Broome shared a bit about their excitement in getting to return to their characters for another season. “Oh, we were so excited, weren’t we? Such a privilege to be able to revisit them,” Broome said.

“And I know, like, end of Season 1, we were just so, just hoping that we would get to do it again. So getting to do it again was such, yeah, such a privilege. And also to revisit them from a different place, because we’ve… How long was it between? A year and a bit? Over a year and a bit. And our lives have moved on in a year, and now we’re coming back to it. So we’re seeing the character through fresh eyes, in a way,” Broome continued.
Remmers described coming back to The Buccaneers as “like, a mixture of nostalgia and excited for the new chapters and branches.” For Theo, that chapter included a bit of freedom as he began to figure out who he was when he learned the truth about the context of his and Nan’s marriage. Remmers liked learning that Theo “can let loose.”
“He has it in him to be free and expressionistic. And I think he’s lived a life of suppression. And I think in this season, it’s really exciting that we get to see a side of him where he… He’s free, he’s more free and he allows himself to really feel. Whereas I feel like he’s grown up being restricted with how much he can feel. He has to kind of follow these rules and regulations. And in Season 2, yeah, he’s kind of… He’s feeling left, right, and center,” Remmers explained.

As for Broome, he liked exploring the “that the sort of home that he [Guy Thwarte] builds with the little mini family, he starts building with Jinny and Freddie, is what he wants.” Broome explained that around The Buccaneers Season 2, Episode 3, “Get Her Out,” and The Buccaneers Season 2, Episode 4, “Ice Cream,” is where Guy “really starts to find a home there and a way of life that is simpler and kind of beautiful.”
“And I think he hopes to have that with Nan one day. I think that’s what he’s after. And I also think he can handle a lot more than he thinks he can. Because he has a lot of responsibility in Season 2. And he can step up when it’s time, when it’s required. And I think that’s always good to know,” Broome added.
As Theo and Guy’s lives changed this season, one aspect paralleled that of the titular characters – their friendship had grown apart. Just as Nan, Conchita, Jinny, Lizzy, Mabel (and Honoria) started to spend less time together because of different circumstances, so did Theo and Guy. They only shared the screen again in The Buccaneers Season 2, Episode 6, “Every Single Piece of My Heart.” Matthew Broome said, “I think we missed that element [Guy and Theo’s friendship], didn’t we? Because we were apart for most of this season.”

Guy and Theo’s friendship was instilled early on in The Buccaneers, similar to the five young women. Broome called it “such an integral part to both of those characters’ lives.” It’s part of what made the love triangle between Guy, Nan, and Theo so complicated. All three characters were intertwined for better and worse. Once Theo learned the truth about Guy and Nan spending the night before Theo and Nan’s wedding together, it felt like a permanent fracture in Theo and Guy’s friendship was forming. “Every Single Piece of My Heart” teased some sort of eventual reconciliation between the two men. “So it would be good to see if there is more, to see where that could go,” Broome shared.
“I feel like we missed each other as Guy and Matthew, and as Theo and Guy. We love doing scenes together. And I think that friendship is… I mean, you know, they both lost one of their parents. They both don’t have many other friends. They’re like brothers, you know. And that’s why it’s so tragic that what happens in Season 1 and Season 2, they’re apart. It’s really sad,” Guy Remmers said.
Broome added, “I have hope.” Then, Remmers continued, “We’d both like them to reconnect. There’s a lot of things to be spoken about and lots of things to address. It won’t be easy. Yeah, I love our scenes in Season 1 before everything goes wrong. And it’s just them. I love those scenes so much. So it would be cool to maybe get something together.” Of course, Matthew Broome and Guy Remmers’ thoughtful comments inspired optimism about Theo and Guy’s respective and interconnected futures. Still, only The Buccaneers Season 2’s final two episodes will reveal what’s next for them and their friendship.
