Foundation Season 3 Episode 5 marks the halfway point for this season, and somehow, in the middle of all the high-stakes drama, one thing that really stands out about this hour is the message Brother Dawn (Cassian Bilton) sends to Brother Dusk (Terrence Mann). Maybe it’s just that we hear Dawn telling Dusk “I need to tell you how sorry I am” more than once. Or is it the way the majority of the message plays during the final, tense moments of ‘Where Tyrants Spend Eternity’? Let’s be real: It’s probably both. The writing absolutely helped, too. Whatever the reason, it made enough of an impact that I had to ask about it during my pre-season interview with Bilton and Mann.
Before discussing the those final words, I asked Mann and Bilton about the way their characters diverge from what we’ve previously seen during these Cleonic cycles. Those answers were part of our pre-season preview, but Mann’s comment of “we’re connected almost more this season…than we have been before” is definitely worth keeping in mind. Now, on to the video message itself. As to why Dawn leaves it for Dusk and Dusk alone — nothing for Day, or Demerzel, or even the next Dawn — Bilton told me he and Mann had discussed Foundation Season 3 Episode 5 before our interview, and “the interesting thing about Dusk and about Dawn and their relationship is that they’re both clinging to each other in fear. And I think that really defines their proximity.”
So, “what’s interesting about that video message is, because of Day’s absence in the early parts of the season when it comes to preparing me for my ascension, Dusk really fills that void and is there to nurture me through that.” He also pointed out a little bit of a parallel to Dusk and Dawn uniting against Day in Season 2 when they lost their memories. But this time, as Mann put it, they’re not uniting against him, they’re uniting “in spite of him.”
After talking about the two characters’ love for one another and how love isn’t really “possible” when you become Brother Day, Bilton pointed out, “yes, it’s a message to just Dusk. But I think there’s also an element of Dawn which is going, ‘I’m saying goodbye to the kind person I could have been. Because I know, as soon as I embark on this mission, I’ve got to really harden because there’s no way I’m going to pull off what I’m trying to pull off if I’m a human being. I’ve got to be a Cleon.” Dawn’s certainly up to the task of being a Cleon when he visits Clarion. But, well. It doesn’t exactly end well for him, does it?

Brother Dawn’s message to Brother Dusk in Foundation Season 3 Episode 5
“I need to tell you how sorry I am. For what I’ve done. And what I’m about to do…I need to tell you how sorry I am…I’m trying to do something worthwhile. Something consequential. But as a result, I can’t be there for your ascension…You were wondering if you were going to be one of the Dusks that would run when it’s their time, who’s afraid to die. I don’t think you will be…be brave. Be at peace, Brother Dusk. And I pray I see you again, wherever we tyrants spend eternity.”
