There is something beautiful about being a fangirl. It’s as if you never lose your sense of wonder and that childlike sense of wonder. Sitting down to watch The Wrong Paris, I wasn’t sure what to expect because, unfortunately, Miranda Cosgrove has always just been iCarly to me. I say unfortunately, because she is so multitalented, and we all need to not pigeonhole people into one role. So, looking outside the box that I had her in was going to be new to me.
But I like the new.
And I loved her in this role.
The Wrong Paris stars Cosgrove alongside Pierson Fode. In the movie, which is like The Bachelor meets well, every rom-com we can think of – Cosgrove plays Dawn. She’s an aspiring artist who has been accepted to school in Paris. She doesn’t have the money to cover tuition, but no worries – her sister has a plan. She talks her into auditioning for a dating show, The Honey Pot.
Dawn isn’t one for dating shows, but knows that the appearance fee can cover her tuition. No surprise, she gets on the show. She knows she’s joined for the wrong reasons, but doesn’t care. She’s laser-focused.
Until she’s reminded that she won’t get her appearance fee if she leaves without the “honey” not choosing her.
This means that she’s going to have to convince him to send her home. The problem is, he has been enamored with her since he met her at a bar and watched her throw someone out. His attraction to her had happened even before the show started.
What we watch unfold is some pretty funny and crazy stuff, but that’s the amazing thing. The show’s central story is about finding oneself, falling in love, and truly offers an escape from reality.
That’s what we need right now. We loved the escape.
We asked Cosgrove about her character of Dawn, who is different than any character that we have seen her play. Dawn is kind, don’t get me wrong. But she’s also relentless, somewhat mean, and somewhat sneaky. So what did she enjoy about playing Dawn? What was the hardest part of Dawn to play?
She said, “I would say the thing I enjoyed the most about the character is just that she’s very different than most of the other characters I played. I almost always play very nice characters. It was really fun to get to play somebody that had just a little more of an edge and is a little – She’s not afraid to speak up for herself. She’s pretty tough. That was just really fun. As far as the hardest thing about playing her, it’s probably just learning all of the different skills that she has. She’s very confident. She’s really good at welding. She can ride a mechanical bull, and she can–“
Fode chimed in, “A horse.”
Miranda then added, “I’m really klutzy. [laughter] I’m not normally very good at anything athletic. That was interesting, learning to lasso, all that stuff.”
It was definitely fun to watch. I would have believed that she’d been riding her whole life.
