NCIS: Sydney Season 3, Episode 7 ‘Gold Digger’ is about fathers and sons, and what makes a good parent. The episode, which focuses heavily on JD, also deepens the dynamics between him and Mackey. That part is not that surprising. The show has been giving us more and more of the two since the last few episodes of the previous season, to the point that right now, we understand there has to be a plan in place.
But there are still obstacles to a possible romantic relationship between the two. The thing that has brought them together, the fact that they’re both parents, is also somewhat of an obstacle. Mackey’s kid is back in the US. And sure, he’s old enough that he doesn’t need mom around all the time, but he’s still far away. What does that mean for Mackey’s desire to stay in Sydney for good?
JD, meanwhile, has Jack, and he would likely not even consider being somewhere where his son is not. But there are also the added issues of his ex and the fact that Jack is a teenager to add into the mix. Of course, what we’ll get with these two at some point is likely just… a decision made in a heightened moment. This season is sure to put Mackey in grave danger. Would they cross the line during a moment like that and deal with the consequences later?

PARTNERS

Partnership isn’t just about having someone’s back when the bullets are flying or when there’s danger, though Mackey and JD have already mastered that. It’s also being able to look across the room and understand what the other person needs without them saying so. It’s being able to sense when something is going on, and most importantly, about offering to be there when there is… for support, a shoulder to cry on, advice. Anything and everything.
Mackey is the kind of person who, when she cares, she really cares. She doesn’t let everyone in, but once you’re inside her circle of people she cares about, she’ll fight for you until the death. And at this point, as close a relationship as she had with DeShawn, there’s no doubt that no one is closer to Mackey than JD.
JD is different. He makes friends with everyone, and he is kind and helpful in almost every circumstance. But that doesn’t mean he shares his true self with anyone. In many ways, his charm is just the mask he wears, so he doesn’t have to really reveal anything personal about himself. And the only person he takes the mask off for is Mackey. That, well… that says everything.

WHAT’S THE POINT OF TRIGGER?

I like Trigger well enough, and he’s provided some moments of lightness to the show—but the show didn’t exactly need him for it in the first place. So, my question at this point is, why are we keeping him? There’s gotta be a plan, I just don’t know what it is. And not knowing is kinda annoying considering how very little we’ve gotten of development for Evie and DeShawn, and for their relationship this season, because we’ve been worried about Trigger.
For now, I’m keeping an open mind. This show usually has its reasons, and I’ve enjoyed the stories they’ve told for the first two seasons, and I really enjoyed what they’ve done with not just Mackey and JD, but also Blue and Doc Roy this season. But whatever they’re setting up with Evie and DeShawn feels like it’s been pushed to the side a little bit in Season 3, and I don’t like it.
And the thing is, I don’t think those two are anywhere near ready to jump into a romantic relationship. But we won’t get anywhere near figuring out who they can be if we don’t start exploring who they are right now, separately from each other. And for that, we’re going to need more than an episode where DeShawn bonds with a teenage chess prodigy. We’re going to need one that focuses on him. And like two or three that focus on Evie, because she’s a much tougher nut to crack.
MORE: We talked to Olivia Swann before Season 2. What did she say about Mackey and JD then?
Things I think I think:
- Online shopping “again”? LOL
- “Did I miss the time when both of you became parents?”
- My partner?
- “Basic training for all NCIS agents and their partners.”
- “Any of that true?”/”Not a word.” I love them, your honor.
- Evie, you’re drooling.
- OMG, everyone is.
- This guy really opened the door not wearing a shirt and then sat like THAT.
- Obvs Trigger likes his toys too.
- Mackey asking about Jack!
- Oh, moving full-time with his mom even makes sense, all things considered. I wonder if JD, at some point, would resent the job for it.
- “Let me know if I can help.” They really do trade off being more earnest.
- Mackey truly cares about JD so much. Probably more than she wants to admit.
- Evie for the WIN. See, she wasn’t just focused on how good the guy looked.
- LOL, at least it wasn’t JD at the end, but the cop no one liked.
