We’ve had Millie Alcock’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow for one teaser trailer and already I know she’s going to break me.
In the teaser trailer for James Gunn’s Supergirl we meet the Kara Zor-El that was teased in Superman. In that film, Kara entered the scene after the big fight went down. She was stumbling about, looked hungover, and had apparently been partying on planets with red suns. Also Krypto was her dog, which makes sense as to why Superman was fighting so hard to get him back. After all, Kara is A) stronger than Superman B) Krypto is her emotional support dog and C) she’s definitely struggling with a crippling depression because she is the last of her kind to remember home.
The Supergirl teaser trailer is a reminder of what she has lost.
Kara is gliding through the world, completely disconnected, whether she’s at a bus stop or at a bar. Nothing really matters to her and you can see that in the teaser trailer moment where she’s in space, mouth agape with a scream that cannot be heard in the vastness surrounding her. That’s someone who is in pain, is struggling to get out of bed and who is perfectly okay with the world or the universe continuing to spin around her because if she faces the reality of what she’s lost, she’s going to crack.
But in a tale as old as time, something shakes up Kara’s routine.
A young girl finds Kara and asks her for help in getting revenge against the bad guys who destroyed her entire world. Now this is what happened in the comic from 2022 from author Tom King and illustrator Bilquis Evely and contributor Matheus Lopes. Now in 2025, director Craig Gillespie and writer Ana Nogueira are bringing this movie to life with Alcock as the lead. And this young girl is going to be a vehicle for Kara working through some of her pain and maybe finding purpose again while also fighting bad guys like Jason Momoa’s Lobo.
Whatever may come for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, it’s amazing that we’ve only gotten one teaser trailer, and already I know that this superhero is going to break me. You don’t get to be this way without being dragged through the mud and losing everything. There’s pain in her story and every step she takes in the Supergirl teaser trailer feels like she’s got the weight of the universe on her shoulders. So imagine the relief when she lets go of it?
So bring it on Millie Alcock, David Gillespie, Anna Nogueira, and James Gunn. I loved David Corenswet in Superman for the hope that he gave me. Now I need to see Kara’s truth.
