St. Denis Medical is a show about working in a hospital, but sometimes it’s nice to see what life is like for everyone outside of it. This week on St. Denis Medical, Season 2, Episode 10, ‘This is From Joyce,’ we got the opportunity to learn about Serena’s side hustle. We also saw Joyce and Sanderson make their breakup official with an awkward assist from Matt. We discuss in our review.

Botox And Bubbly

Something that may or may not surprise people is that a lot of nurses have side hustles or side jobs. Most would ask why because nursing is supposed to be a financially lucrative career. It is and isn’t. When you take into consideration things like the cost of living, which is crazy, it can be difficult to make ends meet. Which is why I appreciated that St. Denis Medical chose to highlight this on Episode 10 ‘This is From Joyce.’
Ron was surprised to learn that Parker, Holly, and Serena all had side hustles. Parker watches his niece, Holly cuts hair, and Serena hosts “Botox and Bubbly” parties. His take was that if they are working side jobs, they must not be managing their finances properly. His theory is that all you have to do is “Save responsibly and you should be good.” What Ron fails to realize is that times have changed. And so has the economy. The economy in which he became a doctor is much different from that of Holly, Parker, and Serena. And how does he know they are not saving responsibly?
When Serena’s nurse flakes out on her to assist with her “Botox and Bubbly Party,” she gets Alex to tag along. That’s $150 extra bucks in her pocket, who wouldn’t want to do that? Especially if you’re just going to be hanging out for a few hours? Unfortunately, Alex once again found a way to get in her own way, and things did not go so well. Injecting Botox is already a controversial thing to do, and there are legal ramifications if something goes wrong. When Alex sees Katie, a young woman at the party, she spends the entire time trying to determine if she’s underage.
I Forgot How To Be Fun

I’m not sure why Alex was obsessing over Katie’s age when Serena told her she was over 18. Serena has been doing the “Botox and Bubbly” parties for a while. That means she knows the clients she’s working with. The fact that Alex didn’t trust Serena was interesting. She trusts her at work daily. Alex’s plan when going to the party was to have some fun, but she did the complete opposite, and it almost cost Serena her side hustle and more.
I can understand Alex to some degree. Nurses often struggle to turn their nurse brain off. Meaning when we go out to do regular activities, we’re constantly assessing everyone around us. There are always concerns that when we engage in any activity, it’s not something that could potentially jeopardize our license. That being said, I hope that was Alex’s last “Botox and Bubly” party because that is definitely not the side job for her.
Matt The Middleman
Poor Matt is such a nice guy, and that makes him an easy target. He’s always being voluntold to do things that have nothing to do with him. And now he’s been thrown into the middle of Joyce and Sanderson’s breakup. When Sanderson comes by the hospital to gather his belongings, instead of Joyce just giving them to him herself, she enlists Matt to do it. That gets him stuck between the two as he plays a game of telephone.
I honestly can’t understand Joyce’s thoughts or feelings about Sanderson. She just called off their wedding, and now she’s being weird. It’s obvious that Sanderson isn’t over the breakup, and it feels like Joyce isn’t either. If she were, she wouldn’t be so concerned about who he’s talking to, but when she sees him chatting it up with another woman, she gets jealous. Joyce makes my head hurt because I want to know what it is she wants. She’s a bit all over the place. I think that she’s just a genuinely lonely person, and whether she wants to admit it or not, she misses Sanderson’s company, which is why I think they’d be better off maintaining a friendship.
Other Thoughts About The Episode

- The way that Alex, and Serena were talking about “Grey Mornings” it made me wish it was a real British TV show.
- “Nurses are such flakes.”
- Keith and his Financial Independence Retire Early (FIRE) plan he has with his wife sounds okay, but I don’t think they need to be consuming old food to save money.
- What is library school?
- Matt, oh sweet Matt, it is okay to say “No” sometimes. I feel like Matt will have an episode where he eventually reaches a breaking point where he’s tired of people taking advantage of him.
- Ron taking investment advice from Bruce. Yeah, I knew that was a bad idea.
- Trying to figure out why Alex thought it was better for her, a nurse to lie and tell someone she was on drugs when she could’ve just I don’t know told the truth.
- “I know what it’s like to have feelings for the wrong person. They’re in your face every day. But you gotta put those feelings aside.” Hmmmmmm, sounds like Matty may not be over Serena like he claimed to be. *Pretends to be shocked.
