After a mini hiatus, St. Denis Medical has returned. On St. Denis Medical Season 2 Episode 13 ‘A New Best Friend,’ the theme was all about friendship. Alex’s husband, Tim, made an unexpected one. And Bruce learned a secret that forced him to make a decision. It also taught him what it means to be a true friend. The episode was enjoyable. It reminded us that having good friends who will go to bat for you is something truly special.

Working in the healthcare industry is all-consuming. The hours are long, so there isn’t much time for socialization. The friends you make tend to be coworkers because those are the people you spend the most time with. It wasn’t a surprise to us when Alex’s husband, Tim, came in to get his knee checked; he and Bruce hit it off.

Even though Tim and Bruce do have some things in common, we understand Alex’s feeling apprehensive about them becoming friends. After all, Bruce is cocky, and he tends to be narcissistic. Also, for Alex, there’s a risk of crossing boundaries she wasn’t prepared for. When Bruce recommended a sleep study for Alex’s snoring, she knew she had to put a stop to the friendship.
Per usual, as most things tend to go with Alex, her plan backfired.
Alex decided to enlist Matt to help in her harebrained scheme to break up Tim and Bruce’s potential friendship. He was more than willing. You see, Matt was supposed to be the third person on a trivia team with Bruce and Chaplain Steve. But when Bruce started to bond with Tim, he ousted Matt and made him the third person. Alex planned to have Matt call into Tim’s grass company and place an order for a project so large that Tim would have no time to hang out with Bruce, including for trivia night.
And because Matt isn’t used to covert operations like this, you know it didn’t go well.

The plan served its intended purpose: to make Tim cancel on Bruce. However, Alex was forced to come clean. Because the “Order” that Matt placed was so ridiculously large, it would have put his real orders on the back burner. That’s Tim’s income. That’s Alex’s family income. Once again, I find myself wondering why Alex just can’t be honest about her feelings.
Instead of just telling Tim, who, from what I see, is an understanding person, that she wasn’t comfortable with him and Bruce being friends, she concocted a plan that just made things worse. Thankfully, she came to her senses sooner rather than later. I loved that Tim did tell her he understood where she was coming from. I also love that he told her he knows who Bruce is and has no plans to become like him. He thinks he’s a cool guy he could grab a beer with.
After what Bruce did this week, I’m inclined to agree.
We’ve known since the start of St. Denis Medical that Matt really likes Bruce and sees him as a friend. They have been one of my favorite dynamics to watch. Bruce cares about Matt even though he doesn’t admit it outright. He’s like a big brother to Matt, whether he wants to believe it or not. And we learned just how much he cares about him after witnessing his reaction to Chaplain Steve and Serena’s relationship.
Bruce is a bit of a hospital gossip in his own way. He sees all the goings on at St. Denis, but I’m honestly not surprised, considering he’s a trauma surgeon. They are meticulous and precise. They pay attention to every single detail. Of course, he’d find out that Serena and Chaplain Steve are hooking up. What he didn’t expect was how much Chaplain Steve dislikes Matt.

That caught me off guard, too. I didn’t realize Chaplain Steve didn’t like Matt. It feels like it came out of left field. Matt and Chaplain Steve haven’t had a lot of interaction on St. Denis Medical. To me, there is no reason for him to dislike Matt. Especially when he knows nothing about him. Chaplain Steve said something about Matt that I thought was pretty mean, and it was clear that Bruce didn’t like it either.
Chaplain Steves’ attitude made Bruce re-evaluate some things. He decided it would be better to take him off the trivia team and put Matt on it instead. That made me happy, and I know Bruce was happy about it too. He tried to play it cool as if he was bringing him in as someone he and Tim could blame if they lost. But deep down, Bruce knew having Matt on the team would be much more fun and a lot more meaningful.
Now that Bruce has this intel about Chaplain Steve and Serena, it’s only a matter of time before it gets back to Matt. I know that he’s trying to protect Matt as much as he can from finding out, but secrets always come out. And because this is one of the most dramatic storylines on St. Denis Medical right now, it will come out. And as messy as it will be, I can’t wait.
Other Thoughts About the Episode

- Serena, I understand there was a “Code Blue,” but girl, take the contraband with you.
- Why am I not surprised that Joyce ate the Mushroom chocolate bar?
- Also, that’s what Joyce gets for eating something that doesn’t belong to her.
- On the flip side, Joyce and patient Jerry, who also consumed Mystic chocolate, bonded. And she didn’t feel so alone anymore. She was able to release a lot of pent-up feelings she’s been holding in since her breakup with Sanderson.
- Ron’s leather shoes squeaking all over the hospital is proof that even expensive things can be of poor quality.
- I take back what I said about Chaplain Steve in my review of St. Denis Medical Season 2 Episode 11 ‘This Isn’t Bingo.’
- I kinda like the idea of Bruce and Tim becoming friends. Sorry Alex.
- Alex, next time you concoct a scheme, maybe don’t enlist a sweet guy like Matt.
