Sometimes You Find Home In The Strangest Of Places
I had a feeling this one was going to break me, and it did, completely, in the quietest possible way. Sterling Point has been this show that wasn’t supposed to affect me the way it has. It has been a journey – one that doesn’t come from everything but Megan Park manages to make sense of a lot of things and offer insight to human existence. She manages to put together a show that gives the beauty This episode isn’t loud. It doesn’t need to be. It just sits with the weight of everything that’s already happened and lets these characters finally feel it, all the way through, in real time. Let’s talk about it.
REFRESH
We open on Annie’s last few days, and there’s this soft, aching backdrop to everything — friends hanging out, trying to hold onto a summer that’s already slipping away, while underneath it all, Steven and Ramona are each quietly, separately refreshing a DNA testing portal, waiting for an answer neither of them fully wants and can’t stop needing. There’s something so specific about that kind of dread — the compulsive checking, the bracing yourself every single time, even though nothing new is going to appear until it appears.
But you’ll keep refreshing no matter what. It’s weird to me that she’s so anxious to know the man that helped keep her and her siblings apart, but also it makes sense that there is a calm in that.
Ramona has more or less made peace with the idea that she’d rather die than have Joe confirmed as her father, though “made peace” might be generous — she’s accepted it as a possibility, the way you accept bad weather, not because you want it but because refusing to accept it changes nothing.
So I can understand her want to know if Steven is her father. But would it make things easier or harder?
EVERYTHING MAKES SENSE
Meanwhile Annie and Ellis are falling deeper into each other, spending every spare second together, and it’s genuinely lovely to watch, especially knowing it’s borrowed time. There’s a tenderness to how unguarded they are with each other now, like they’ve both decided that whatever complications exist around them, this — the two of them, together — isn’t going to be one of the things they let slip away without trying.
Ramona is alone, going through the mail, when she finds it: the letter from the DNA lab. It’s Stephen. He’s her father, not Joe.
Connor is dealing with his own quiet reckoning in the background — wrestling with whether he even wants to know who his birth parents are, scrolling through a website that could give him that answer if he lets it. It’s not just about him though – his choice affects him and Annie both. But as far as the story goes – It’s such a smart parallel to drop in right now, because the whole episode basically bears the question: is knowing where you come from always a gift, or is it sometimes just a different kind of grief?
CONGRATS! IT IS A GIRL!
Steven and Ramona telling Connor and Annie the news is hard, and Annie is the one it levels the most. She can’t understand why Ramona wouldn’t have told her right away, and Ramona’s answer — I didn’t want to ruin your last few days here if it wasn’t true — is gentle and well-intentioned. Annie throws it right back at her: what happened to no more secrets? And she’s not wrong to. This family has spent an entire summer promising each other honesty and then finding new, smaller ways to withhold it anyway, even when the withholding comes from love.
Annie’s reaction to the news that Steven is Ramona’s biological father isn’t the best, but I do get it. It’s another thing that Ramona has gotten that Annie has always wanted.
“This Doesn’t Change Anything” (It Does)
Steven pulls Annie aside to talk, and he tells her, simply, you’re my daughter, I love you, you’re my daughter, this doesn’t change anything.
Except it does. Annie says so, plainly — she’s tired of people insisting nothing has changed when everything clearly has. And she’s right. Her father has a daughter out there whose entire childhood he missed because of stubbornness, timing, and a refusal to reach past anger and broken pieces of the past. Ramona might not want anything from him right now, but that doesn’t mean it stays that way forever, and that possibility alone rearranges the whole shape of this family.
Annie hates seeing her dad this upset, this broken open, and her instinct — because it’s always her instinct — is to fix it. To smooth it over, make it better, absorb the damage so nobody else has to. But she can’t fix this one. She’s the kid in this equation. She always has been, even when she’s been forced to act like the adult.
And I think that’s the real injustice sitting underneath this whole episode. People could look at this story and say Annie upended everyone’s lives this summer — showing up, asking questions, refusing to let secrets stay buried. But I don’t think that’s what she did at all. I think what she actually did was remind everyone what it felt like to feel something again, after years of everyone quietly numbing themselves to survive. That’s not the same as destruction. That’s disruption in service of honesty. She was the catalyst of change and honesty that so many people needed.
Steven is trying, genuinely trying, and when Annie says maybe she should just stay, he tells her, not unkindly, that staying won’t fix everything either. He’s not wrong. She can’t run toward Ellis as a way of running away from the mess back home. But god, I understand why she wants to. Sometimes the place that hurts the most is also the only place that’s ever felt honest.
Mushrooms, Raccoons, and a Boy Who’s Actually Scared
In a much lighter, much weirder beat, Connor and Denise are spending time together, and it is deeply, deeply weird. Denise, in classic form, reminds him she’s basically a mother figure, you can talk to me – right after it comes out that Connor got into her mushrooms. Not a small amount, either. He’s fully somewhere else, convinced a raccoon by the mailbox is coming for him.
Denise tells him she doesn’t think he finds this funny, and she’s right – he doesn’t. I don’t think that the show focused enough this season on how any of this affects him. Underneath the high, he’s actually scared, looking at her for answers about all of this – the DNA results, the family unraveling – and she has absolutely nothing to give him. Some things don’t have an answer waiting on the other side of asking.
Ramona and Oona: The Breakup That Broke My Heart
Ramona goes to Oona’s to talk through everything — how she doesn’t know if she can have a relationship with Steven, how Annie thinks she’s trying to take him away when that couldn’t be further from what she wants, how she isn’t sure she wants to get to know him at all, but the possibility exists now and she can’t un-know that. She admits how hard it’s been watching Annie through all of this too, feeling like everything between them has shifted, like the person she thought she was has quietly stopped being true.
And Oona – instead of meeting her where she is, instead being empathetic – jumps straight to are you saying you want a relationship with him? And when Ramona says she doesn’t know, just that it feels possible now, Oona’s response is cold, almost defensive – well, I know how that’s going to go.
She makes it about her.
EMPATHETIC MUCH?
The lack of empathy in that moment is honestly staggering. It made me have to take a step back. Oona isn’t actually worried about Ramona right now – she’s worried about herself, about Ramona eventually going to New York and forgetting her. She’s so consumed by her own fear of being left behind that she can’t see the person in front of her whose entire sense of self has been dismantled and rebuilt twice over in a matter of days. Ramona finally, finally stands up for herself telling Oona – you’re making this about you, about your own issues, I’ve never given you a reason to think I’d leave.
And Oona just – shuts down. She doesn’t like being challenged. Says maybe they should break up. Tells Ramona to go see the world, do whatever she wants. She’s cold about it, so quick to detach, and watching Ramona’s face in that moment is genuinely heartbreaking, because it’s just one more thing taken from her in a summer that has already taken so much. We’re breaking up? she asks, and Oona says yeah, I think it’s best, and you can watch something in Ramona just quietly fracture.
the Hardest Kind of Goodbye
Ellis and Annie are packing, and Annie’s doing what she does – laughing through it, because honestly, if you can’t laugh through something like this, what else is there? They joke about what a boring summer it’s been, and she throws it right back at him – boring, when you found out your dad had an affair with my mom, when your best friend turned out to be your sister? He says, actually, the most boring part was watching his parents’ relationship fall apart, and underneath the joke, you can feel exactly how heartbroken he is. How heartbroken they both are.
He tells her he’s going to miss her so much. She insists it’ll be fine, they’ll visit, they’ll call, they’ll write. He tells her, gently, that they have to leave it there – no promises neither of them can keep from hundreds of miles apart – and she’s not ready to hear that. They love each other. Sometimes that’s just not enough to outrun distance, timing, and everything else stacked against them.
But these two – I hope that they try.
Selling the Island
Connor, at Sully’s, tries to get help finding mushrooms — for the raccoon situation, apparently — and there’s a genuinely funny mixup where Sully thinks he means the food kind. Ramona walks in, shaken, tells them Oona broke up with her. Sully wraps her in a hug, offers food, and Connor just watches her, quietly trying to figure out a way to comfort his sister.
Ramona admits something she never thought she’d say: I hate it here. Oona broke up with me. Everyone’s mad at me. And Connor, in classic Connor fashion, offers the worst-best advice of the season: sell the island. Annie said she’d support whatever Ramona wants. You could sell that whole thing, you just have to talk to Annie.
There’s a small, unexpected moment of connection between them here too — Connor admits, almost sheepishly, that he actually likes her, genuinely, even before he found out his dad was, in his words, her sperm donor. She says, I guess I like you too. It’s sweet, in its own chaotic way, even if it comes wrapped in a suggestion that’s clearly born out of Connor’s own selfish wants, rather than any real understanding of what Ramona needs. What she actually needs right now isn’t a financial windfall or an escape hatch — it’s support. Grief doesn’t always make good decisions look any different from bad ones in the moment, and she starts, quietly, actually considering it.
Two Different Definitions of Home
Later, Annie finds Ramona in the kitchen, and Ramona tells her she wants to sell. Annie is floored — wait, what, when did this happen? And underneath her shock is this immediate, protective instinct toward Ellis, toward the life that would be uprooted if that island changes hands, even though she has no idea Ramona is also, quietly, protecting herself.
Ramona lays it out — Joe is basically dead to her now, she and Oona are over, everything here is just pain stacked on pain. Annie tells her no amount of money is worth her home, and Ramona snaps back with something that lands hard – you don’t understand, you’ve never had to worry about anything, this could genuinely change my life. And it could. But so could letting Stevzen change her life, in a completely different way, if she let herself consider it.
Then it gets sharper. Ramona tells her, you didn’t even really want to be my sister — you liked the idea of it, but when it actually happened, you backed away. Annie admits, fairly, that she hasn’t handled all of it perfectly, but tells her honestly: it feels like my dad is becoming more your dad than mine right now, and that’s hard for me too. Which is fair. Genuinely fair. But so is Ramona’s exhaustion at constantly being expected to make room for everyone else’s feelings about her own existence.
TRYING TO SAVE IT
Annie tries to argue that her mother wouldn’t have wanted the island sold, and Ramona, cutting and true and brutal all at once, says: she’s dead. We don’t know what she’d want. She’s dead.
It’s harsh. It’s also completely accurate, and that’s exactly why it stings so much.
Then Ramona pulls out the thing that actually settles it — you promised. You promised you wouldn’t try to stop me from doing whatever I wanted. And Annie, cornered by her own word, has to concede.
What gets me about this whole exchange is that Annie and Ramona aren’t actually fighting each other here — they’re each fighting their own grief while it happens to be standing in front of the other person. Annie is trying to protect what’s left of a home she just found. Ramona is trying to escape a life that has repeatedly broken her trust. They both need the same thing – someone to just stay steady with them – and neither of them can offer it to the other in this exact moment, because they’re both too depleted.
One Memory, Held Like Glass
That night, Ramona sleeps in Gordon’s room. Annie sleeps in Ramona’s, and lies there thinking about her own mother — one single memory of Goldie scratching her back, so faint she can’t even be sure it’s real, but she chooses to believe it is. She lets herself imagine what could have been, if her mother had stayed in that life, in that room, taking care of her the way she deserved to be taken care of.
There’s something about Annie’s relationship to this loss that feels distinct from Connor’s or Ramona’s — like she’s the one carrying the most tender, unresolved thread of longing for a mother she barely got to keep. Losing the island now would mean losing the last physical place where any of that memory still lives, and I think that’s exactly why letting go of it feels so unbearable to her, even more than the money or the practicality of it.
In her mind, or in a dream, she imagines her mother apologizing to her — sorry — and through tears, Annie tells her it’s okay. It’s a small, quiet moment, but it does something in her. Some kind of permission gets granted in that imagined forgiveness, even if it’s only ever going to exist inside her own head.
I Can’t Sell
In the morning, Annie crosses the hall and tells Ramona plainly: I can’t do it. I can’t sell. I didn’t realize how much I need this place, but I do.
Ramona is furious. She tells Annie that this is so messed up, I feel like I’m dying here — and Annie, trying to reason with her, says something true but cruel in its timing: you’re sixteen, you don’t know what you need, this would be the biggest mistake of your life. She’s not wrong, not really. But being right doesn’t make it any easier to hear. , and Ramona storms off, and Annie is left crying, telling her she’s leaving today after all.
Meanwhile Connor gets the call he’s been half-dreading, half-hoping for — the service he used to search for his birth parents has actually found them. And he just freezes. Full stop. Because now the thing he wasn’t sure he wanted is suddenly, undeniably real, and there’s no unknowing it once you know.
A Kid Caught in the Middle
Ramona goes to Oona’s looking for her, and it’s Maplel who answers, covering for her sister — she’s not here, I don’t know when she’ll be back. Ramona, aching, just asks her to pass along that she came by, that she wants to talk. Maple says she will and tells her sorry. After Ramona leaves, she tells Oona — through the window, once the curtain opens — that she feels bad for her.
Ramona later tells Oona, once they do talk, how messed up it is to put a kid in the middle of an adult conflict like that, to make her lie. Oona agrees, genuinely sorry, that poor kid caught in the middle of everything neither of them can fully manage themselves. And there’s this smaller, sadder moment where Maple climbs up and gently tells her sister she should just talk to Ramona already — to which Oona deflects, insisting she’s fine, when she very clearly isn’t. Kids always know. They just don’t always get told the truth in return
The Story Annie Needed and Didn’t Want
Before she leaves, Annie goes to see Joe, finding him out on the patio. You can feel her nerves in every step toward him. He tells her Ellis is out getting the plane ready. She sits, tells him about a dream she had of her mother the night before, and asks him something she’s clearly been carrying for a while: do you think she ever regretted blowing up her life?
Joe tells her no — if anything, Goldie told him she wished she’d done it sooner.
Then Annie asks the question underneath all the others – what actually happened, that night, between when dad took them and when she died?
And Joe tells her. Goldie had a flight booked to New York, just two days later. It wasn’t early labor — she had a heart condition, and that night the pain became unbearable, worse than any contraction should have been. He rushed her to the hospital by boat as fast as he could, but the lake felt endless, like he could never move fast enough to actually help her. At the hospital, they kept pushing him out of the room. He remembers standing in the doorway, hearing a bang, doctors flying around a corner, medical equipment scattering. That’s the exact moment he knew it was bad. She went into emergency surgery, an emergency C-section.
WAS SHE SCARED
Annie asks if she was scared. Joe says your mom was the bravest person I’ve ever known – that right before they took her back, she looked at him and smiled, like she needed to reassure him instead of the other way around.
What happened next, Annie asks.
That was the last time I saw her, Joe says. She never made it out of surgery.
So she never even got to hold Ramona, Annie says. Never got to see her.
No, Joe says. She didn’t.
He’s in tears. Annie is unraveling right in front of him, and it’s one of the heaviest, most quietly devastating scenes this show has given us — not because of any twist, but because of how simply, plainly tragic it is. A woman who finally chose herself, finally found something honest, and never got the chance to actually live inside that choice.
Two Girls, Running Toward the Same House
Annie runs back through the woods toward the cabin. Ramona is walking back too, from her own direction — and there’s something quietly poetic about Gordon having left this exact space behind for both of them, never fully knowing how much they’d end up needing each other inside it.
Ramona finds Steven there, watching them carry Annie’s bags down. He tells her, simply, I was hoping I’d get to see you. He wants to know his daughter. He tells her, I don’t know if there’s a world where you and I can spend real time together, but – and before he can finish, she hugs him. Tight. Long. Annie sees it happen from a distance, and it’s impossible not to wonder what’s going through her head watching her father hold the daughter he never got the chance to raise.
What She’s Not Sure She Wants
Upstairs, Ramona is crying in her room, and Annie finds her there, gentle. She wants to comfort her sister. You’ve been a girl with a dead mom your whole life, Annie tells her, and I really wish it had been me instead. But you have a dad. A really good dad. You deserve to be taken care of.
I know I deserve it, Ramona says. I just don’t know if I want it.
You do, Annie insists. I think you need it.
How would you know what I need? Ramona asks.
Because I’m your sister, Annie says.
And they just look at each other, holding that sentence between them, before everything cuts to black.
What Happens Next, We Don’t Know Yet
The final images arrive fast and ambiguous — curtains open, a figure rising, and it’s Ramona, somehow already in New York. Then Annie, jumping into the lake, apparently choosing to stay, whatever staying ends up meaning.
We don’t get resolution. We just get two girls making two entirely different choices about where home is supposed to be, and the show trusts us to sit in that uncertainty rather than resolving it neatly.
IT ENDS LIKE THIS?
This episode didn’t need a single dramatic reveal to devastate — it just needed to slow down and let every character actually feel the weight of everything that’s already happened to them. Annie learning the real story of how her mother died reframes her entire arc this summer; she wasn’t chasing a fling with Ellis or a rebellion against her father, she was quietly trying to reconnect with a version of aliveness her mother only got to touch for a moment before losing everything. Ramona, meanwhile, is being asked to graciously accept a father, a sister, and an inheritance she never asked for, all while the one relationship she chose for herself falls apart in the same breath.
Sterling Point keeps returning to the same idea, over and over: family isn’t just the people who share your blood, it’s the people who show up and stay steady when everything else is falling apart. Some people manage that. Others don’t, and it costs them everything. And some, like Annie choosing to jump into that lake instead of onto that plane, decide that home isn’t where you’re from — it’s where you finally let yourself be known completely, mess and all.\
