Sterling Point Season 1, Episode 1 Review: The Girl Who Had a Plan for Everything Except This

Prime Video delivers on a new series from the mind of Megan Park

We don’t have all the time in the world to start new shows, but when it come to ones that we’re not willing to pass on – Sterling Point is at the top of the list. From the mind of Megan Park- anything that she doeswe pay attention. She is a creative genius.

Some shows open with a car chase, a person waking up, or even a make-out scene. Sterling Point opens with a ten-step skincare routine and that tells you everything you need to know about Annie Jacobson. Toner is not optional. Annie would tell you that herself, mid-routine, without breaking eye contact with the mirror. She’s focused.

Annie is aggressively Type A. She is the kind of person who has a five-year plan and treats deviation from it like a personal insult. Her life plan hinges on getting into Wharton’s summer business program. She is pretending she isn’t checking her email every four minutes while checking it.

TWINS

Her twin brother Connor exists as her genetic opposite – no five-year plan, general life philosophy of “it’ll work out.” Twins who shared a womb and seemingly nothing else. The show gets a lot of quiet comedy out of how two people raised in the same house can turn out to be polar opposites. Connor’s worried about getting his HPV shot and immediately Googling symptoms. It’s this kind of dry, throwaway bit that made me laugh more than a punchline would have. It’s not written as a joke, it’s just a boy being a mildly anxious idiot. Somehow the dry humor in Sterling Point is what draws me in.

Annie manages uncertainty by eliminating it — she plans, she prepares, she reduces the unknown to a checklist she can control. Connor manages uncertainty by refusing to acknowledge it exists in the first place. They’re just two different ways of surviving the same house, the same deceased mother, the same overly gentle father who clearly tries hard, and a life that’s somehow sheltered even in Manhattan, which seems almost impossible. The show lets you watch two people cope in opposite directions and trusts you to notice that they still need each other.

REJECTION

When the rejection email comes, Annie’s taken aback. And here’s where the show starts doing something more interesting than “sad teen gets bad news.” Annie isn’t just disappointed — she’s disoriented, in the specific way that happens to people who have never had to build a plan B because plan A always worked. Her dad tries to soften the blow by offering her a summer of actual travel, which is a sweet, well-meaning dad move that lands completely wrong, because Annie doesn’t want freedom right now. She wants the thing she worked so hard for. She doesn’t want to feel like a failure.

Connor, naturally, pokes at the wound instead of dressing it, because that’s what siblings are for. Watching her walk out of the room isn’t dramatic — it’s the quiet kind of retreat you do when you need somewhere private to feel something you’re not ready to feel in front of an audience. I found that drew me into Annie’s story more than I cared to admit.

OLIVER AND THE VERY BAD DAY

Annie’s relationship with Oliver is introduced with a rule already in place: she won’t break up with him until he comes out of the closet, on his own terms, on his own timeline. That’s not a small thing to carry — loving someone patiently while also quietly waiting for a conversation that may or may not happen is kind of exhausting. Yet Annie does it with the same controlled composure she brings to everything else.

When Oliver starts talking about a solo trip to Thailand, you can watch her run the numbers in real time: is this a boyfriend making plans, or a boyfriend making an exit? She asks him outright if he’s trying to break up with her — which she says she’s okay with — and comes across as both anxious and trying to remain in control. Oliver is visibly on the verge of finally telling her the truth when Connor bursts in with news that reroutes the entire episode: their grandfather has died.

Not just any grandfather. Their mother’s father. A man they apparently know almost nothing about, in a family where the mother — and anything about her — is quietly off-limits as a topic. Oliver, sensing (correctly) that this is not his moment, leaves before he can finish his sentence. Connor realizes what he interrupted, and Annie’s exasperated “I’m gonna kill you” to Connor is the most normal-sibling reaction imaginable.

WE’RE CANADIAN?

Instantly I know that Sterling Point is going to do something special — completely relatable while still delivering the drama and the beauty you’d expect from something out of the mind of Megan Park.

The lawyer’s visit is where the show tells you exactly what kind of story this is going to be. What should be a simple family death notification turns into the reveal of a grandfather who owns an island. In Canada. It’s also the moment that piques Annie’s interest, because it shows her that her father is hiding something. He’s kept them from their grandfather this whole time and clearly doesn’t want them to know why — intercepting the letter meant for his kids before they can even read it. That’s the moment the episode stops being about a rejection email and starts being about a much larger, much older secret the twins don’t know exists. For a girl whose entire identity is built on being prepared, being kept in the dark by her own father is arguably a bigger blow than Wharton.

Ambien Doesn’t Know Geography

The flight from New York to Toronto is roughly forty-five minutes, which makes Annie’s decision to take an Ambien beforehand a small, perfect joke about a girl who over-prepares for absolutely everything, including situations that require zero preparation.

The seaplane leg is where she meets Ellis, the pilot who ferries people out to the island, and who greets her nervous energy with an easy, unbothered charm. The two have personalities that balance each other out and just make sense.

When she claims she’s high to explain her anxiety and yawning, he plays along — “I take a lot of drugs too” — despite very clearly being the most wholesome person on this show. Ellis screams comfort, love, and the type of person who will always embrace a slower life. He’s the opposite of Annie, but in a different way than Connor is the opposite of Annie. Ellis is a mystery that intrigues Annie’s heart.

Gordon’s House

Muskoka is not Brooklyn, and the show lets that contrast do a lot of quiet work. There’s no boat waiting, no plan B, no concierge — just Annie, alone, having to ask a stranger how to get food, and how to even get around the island.

Gordon’s house is a revelation before Annie even opens a door. She learns her grandfather essentially owned the island, and inside the house, filled with acorns and dust and a life she never got to witness, she finds photographs of her mother. Young, radiant, clearly beloved by a father Annie never got to know. I think this is the most quietly devastating beat of the episode: Annie isn’t just meeting her grandfather posthumously through his letters. She’s meeting this version of her mother for the first time, too. A squirrel getting into the kitchen through an open window breaks the tension at exactly the right moment, which is the show reminding you, gently, not to take itself too seriously for too long.

MEETING JOE AND OONA

Needing food and finding the marina empty of boats, Annie meets Joe, who runs the docks. After some paperwork trouble, since she has approximately none of the required documentation to rent a boat, she meets Oona. Oona lives on the island with her little sister Mabel while their mother is off “finding her chakras” in India. Oona has exactly the kind of untethered confidence that makes her Annie’s narrative foil in miniature: no life jacket, no plan, no interest in either. Watching the two of them together is a little like watching control and chaos try to have a conversation.

I loved every second.

HANDJOBS

The boat lesson that follows is the funniest sequence in the premiere, largely because Oona’s chosen teaching method — comparing steering to giving a hand job — is delivered with total sincerity and humor. They end up carving a full circle into the lake, panicking in stereo, and the payoff line (“so what you’re saying is you’ve never given one before” / “no, actually, I have”) is the kind of dry, deadpan exchange that works because Park has created characters who feel real and grounded. They’re funny without any intention of being funny.

They’re just being real.

Free Coffee and Small-Town Economics

At the grocery store on the mainland, Annie gives Oona the shortened version of why she’s really here, editing herself down to the manageable version.

Sully, working the counter, asks for ID neither of them has, and Annie clocks that there’s history here she doesn’t know. Sully is sarcastic and joyful — humorous in a deadpan sort of way. He gives them everything for free, then delivers reality in the form of a joke about “ripping off a small business owned by women,” landing with the specific delivery of someone who’s made this joke a hundred times. If you’re looking for the character who represents the show’s ideal of community — showing up for near-strangers without being asked twice — it’s Sully.

Meanwhile, back at the marina, Joe is sitting with the kind of dread that comes from knowing secrets are about to come to light and not being the one who gets to control the timing. He knows he has to tell someone the truth about what Gordon was hiding, and the lawyer all but confirms it’s inevitable — “I wouldn’t be surprised if Annie made it there soon.” There’s real weight in watching an adult sit with the knowledge that the truth is about to detonate a family that doesn’t even know it’s standing on a grenade yet.

DISCONNECT

Annie celebrates Canada Day with her new friends. They all live a disconnected life, one she isn’t used to, since she’s so used to being plugged in. She sits on the rocks trying and failing to get cell service, and Ellis finds her there. What follows is an unhurried scene that does more relationship-building than the boat-driving disaster did. He tells her, essentially, to let the phone go and let the island happen to her instead. There’s something about the scenes the two of them share that carries a real sense of calmness.

The two talk about the island and Gordon — Ellis not really questioning her interest, but answering questions she doesn’t even know she has yet. When he mentions, almost offhand, that a comparable island nearby sold for nine million dollars the year before, you can watch two things land on Annie’s face at once: shock at the number, and a colder, quieter disbelief. Money is never really the point. The money represents — how much was kept from her, and for how long.

SEEING RORY

The group heads to a party, and it’s here that the show lets its ensemble breathe a little. Rory, it turns out, isn’t a stranger — he went to school with Annie and Connor back in New York. The recognition on his face when he sees her again is immediate and a little starstruck. His mother Denise is thrilled to see her — genuinely, warmly thrilled — but it’s Denise who casually detonates what might be the biggest bomb so far: Annie’s parents had filed for divorce before her mother died. Annie didn’t know. Rory clearly didn’t expect to be the one breaking it to her.

Watching her absorb that bombshell in real time, surrounded by people who’ve apparently always known more about her own family than she has, is the most vulnerable Annie gets in the whole episode. This is the exact moment the world stops asking what she wants and starts telling her who she actually is. It doesn’t matter what she thinks of that.

Luckily for Annie, her new friends are ready to leave. She gets the space to hide her shock and the questions forming in her mind.

Ellis walks her home afterward — not much said, nothing resolved, just company, which might be exactly what she needs more than answers at this point.

But there’s no moment to breathe. Another secret is ready to drop and change everyone involved. Annie enters the cottage, and a girl rounds the corner and demands to know what Annie is doing there.

WHO ARE YOU

Two women. One house. One dead mother who, it’s increasingly clear, left behind far more than anyone bothered to mention.

It’s worth remembering where this episode started: a girl alone in a bathroom, working through a ten-step routine designed to control exactly one small, manageable thing about her own life. Skin, at least, rewards the work — you put it in, and you get a predictable, visible result. Everything else Annie has learned in the last forty-eight hours argues the opposite. Family is complicated, and still very much unfinished.

I don’t think Annie came to Muskoka looking for a sister. I don’t think she came looking for much beyond a name and a reason. But that’s the quiet tragedy and promise of this premiere: every question Annie thought she was asking about her grandfather turns out to be a question about her mother, and every answer about her mother is turning out to be a question about herself. She built her whole life on being the person who always knows what’s coming next. Sterling Point is the first place that’s ever refused to let her.
