Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 2 is a challenge for Ellen and Brian AKA Brellen so far! They have more responsibility, more complicated family dynamics, and even more at stake. The war is forcing them to grow in ways they couldn’t have anticipated, while the people around them make choosing sides anything but simple. We sit down with Harriet Slater and Jamie Roy to talk about how all of that changes Ellen and Brian’s relationship this season. Ready?
Here we go!
Harriet Slater and Jamie Roy on Ellen and Brian Growing into Leaders

In Season 1, Brian and Ellen’s relationship was already complicated by everything surrounding them. But Season 2 brings a different kind of pressure. Now, they are becoming people others have to rely on. They’re becoming leaders. And war has a way of accelerating that process.
For Ellen and Brian, that means having to think beyond themselves. Their decisions have consequences for their families, their clan, and the future they’re trying to build together. It also changes the way they relate to each other because there is now another level of trust required between them.
That doesn’t mean everything suddenly becomes easier. If anything, Season 2 makes their family dynamics more complicated. Ellen’s relationship with her family has already been fractured by betrayal, while Brian’s relationship with Lovatt remains difficult. Yet the wider conflict doesn’t exactly allow them to keep those divisions neatly separated.
War forces people and families to make choices, and sometimes those choices mean standing alongside people with whom you have complicated histories. That’s interesting for Ellen and Brian because they aren’t approaching this conflict from the same place. Their loyalties, their family ties, and everything they’ve already experienced continue to shape the way they see the world around them.
At the same time, their relationship has evolved.
Season 2 allows us to see a more mature version of them, one that has already survived experiences that could have broken them apart. There’s a greater sense that they understand what they’re fighting for—and what they stand to lose.
That raises an important question: Does becoming leaders bring Ellen and Brian closer to each other and their families, or does it create an entirely new challenge for them? We asked Slater and Roy exactly that. And you need to see what they answer.

Ellen & Brian Have Even More to Fight for in Season 2

If the stakes were already high for Ellen and Brian, Season 2 finds a way to make them even higher. That’s one of the best aspects of returning to their story. Everything they do is connected to the people they love and the future they’re trying to protect. And that changes the way we look at their choices.
They always had plenty of reasons to fight, but Season 2 adds another dimension to that fight. Suddenly, the consequences aren’t only about what happens to them as individuals or even as a couple. Their decisions affect the family they’re building and the life they’re hoping to have beyond the conflict.
That can make the idea of going to war feel very different. And it also changes the way Ellen and Brian have to work together. When you’re responsible for more than yourself, there isn’t quite as much room to act purely on instinct or personal desire. Every decision has to take someone else into consideration.
And that’s where their relationship becomes compelling this season. They have to navigate the war while also navigating each other, their families, their loyalties, and everything that comes with the choices they’ve already made. Their relationship is tested because the world around them demands more from both of them.
For Slater and Roy, that meant exploring a version of Ellen and Brian whose relationship has grown considerably since Season 1. So we wanted to know: How does having more to fight for change the way Ellen and Brian face the war and the revolution? See the video to know their answer!
