Chicago Fire Season 15, Episode 1 ‘New Blood’ feels, in many ways, like a fresh start for the show, something hard to do in Season 15. The hour offers a lot of answers and a clear focus on which dynamics the show will invest in going forward. The show also gives unequivocal signs of which storylines it isn’t interested in pursuing, and some of those answers might be celebrated, while others will certainly be received with apprehension, if not dislike.
Overall, though, it’s one of the strongest premieres Chicago Fire has done in a bit and one that, unlike last season’s premiere, didn’t leave me worried about what the rest of the season could bring, but hopeful for what the show had in store for these characters. There’s the setup for a lot of interesting character arcs that I hope the season takes the time to explore, and though there’s one particular thing I didn’t really love, at least this time I understand the reasoning behind it.
Here are some teases about the Chicago Fire Season 15 premiere:
- The episode does a very good job of keeping the tension up as we get the resolution to the Season 14 cliffhanger. Maybe too good, even. I was concerned.
- Iffy on all the new people. Some of them might grow on me; others I’m not so sure about. The dynamic between the candidates feels very off, but I guess that’s the point. They need room to grow.
- Violet, no. Just no.
- I mean, better than the alternative! But still, no.
- Vasquez’s love life remains a thing I cannot get fully invested in. But at least I like him more as a character. Baby steps!
- Really good Stellaride this episode, as the two adjust to different circumstances. Always love when the show remembers to showcase how much their communication skills have improved. Also love when I don’t have to settle for crumbs of the two together.
- What we need this season is a little more follow-through with their storylines, but some of what this episode sets up gives me hope.
- It’s kinda funny when Severide is as predictable as he is in this hour.
- One particular Mouch moment hit me hard. It’s not even surprising at this point how good Christian Stolte is at the really emotional beats.
- “The guy’s a legend.”
- One storyline’s resolution caught me very much off guard. And yet, I’m gonna be honest… I don’t hate where it’s probably leading. I could have made my peace with the alternative, but this surprising resolution was one of the most exciting things about the hour.
- I have never found myself agreeing so much with one particular character as I did this episode. Now, if others would listen.
