Time to sink our teeth in! Eternally Yours Season 1 Episode 1 ‘Pilot,’ is here, introducing us to a dysfunctional vampire family. And we love them. We love them so much that, just one episode in, this family already feels like our own. Is your neck ready?
Here we go!
Charles and Liz’s Broken Marriage
We knew we’d love this show, but we didn’t realize just how much. After watching Eternally Yours Season 1 Episode 1 ‘Pilot,’ we’re left wanting more. You can tell the creators of Ghosts are behind this series. The humor, the endearing characters, the crazy situations, the supernatural twist—it’s all there. But what really hooked us, what kept us watching and craving more, is just how human these characters are.
Charles and Liz can’t stand each other. They’ve been together for centuries, and the love and passion of their early years went down the drain so long ago they can barely remember it. While most romances end with a fairy-tale “happily ever after,” Eternally Yours Season 1 Episode 1 ‘Pilot’ shows us what happens next. And it isn’t pretty.
That’s hardly surprising when you’re with someone as selfish and backward as Charles. He belongs to another era, but the problem is that he hasn’t evolved one bit—unlike Liz. So yes, we totally get where Liz is coming from. There were several moments during the episode where we wanted to give Charles a good shake. The worst part is that he doesn’t even try. Despite everything, Liz keeps attempting to fix their problems and recapture the love and magic that brought them together.
Charles thinks it’s a waste of time. He takes her for granted. They’ve been together for centuries, so he doesn’t expect Liz to disappear, no matter how broken their marriage is. But if I were him, I wouldn’t be so sure. If Eternally Yours Season 1 Episode 1 ‘Pilot’ proved anything, it’s that things can change in an instant.
Jesse’s Biggest Secret Could Destroy His Family
We hope Liz decides to give Charles a taste of his own medicine. While we admire her fighting for their love, Charles needs to step up, and that’s impossible if Liz keeps doing all the heavy lifting. Perhaps the romance between Emma and Max will spur her on. For now, it reminded her what that feeling is like and helped Charles understand that it doesn’t matter what he wants, but what his daughter wants.
He might not like Max or approve of his daughter’s choice of boyfriend, but his opinion doesn’t matter. His daughter’s happiness does. That’s why we loved seeing Liz make him pull his head out of his ass and realize that. We’re hopeful she’ll do the same thing regarding their marriage.
That said, Jesse and Phyllis are the counterparts to Charles and Liz. As we see in Eternally Yours Season 1 Episode 1 ‘Pilot,’ they’re just as in love as they were on day one. They are very happy—on the surface, at least. Phyllis doesn’t know the truth about her husband and children, and whenever she starts to get suspicious, Jesse uses his powers. To us, that sounds like a ticking time bomb.
How long can Jesse keep fooling Phyllis? Will he ever decide to tell her the truth? In fact, after all these years together, why hasn’t he told her? In a way, he robbed her of the chance to choose what to do about it. He’s been lying to her for years. It’s inevitable that Phyllis will find out the truth someday…and it won’t be pretty.
Max’s Vampire Transformation Changes Everything
On another note, we loved getting a glimpse of the youngest family members. Who hasn’t felt like Mort at some point? He comes from a family of powerful vampires but feels insignificant—out of place, as if he doesn’t quite fit in with them. He isn’t as powerful, mysterious, handsome, or interesting as they are. His brother Henry got all of that. Henry effortlessly obtains what Mort desires so deeply, without even really wanting it.
At first, it seemed his father didn’t understand him. He offered only empty platitudes, and we didn’t feel he was truly listening. We’re so glad we were wrong. Jesse was there for Mort, believing in him and trusting him. In the end, it was just a matter of discovering exactly what his power was. Mort had to stop trying to fit the mold and be himself. We love that message.
On another note, in Eternally Yours Season 1 Episode 1 ‘Pilot,’ Max had a meeting with his in-laws that was truly unforgettable. They nearly bit him and drank his blood—only for him to discover they were vampires… and eventually, they turned him into one. It’s no wonder Emma was afraid to bring him home, though we don’t think even she expected this.
We’re dying to see how he reacts! We don’t think Max particularly wanted to become a vampire. Now he has to accept his new reality—something he didn’t choose—and adapt to life as a vampire. All of this while navigating his relationship with Emma. It certainly won’t be easy… but my goodness, it’s going to be so much fun, and we are totally here for it!
P.S. That nod to Twilight was awesome!
Eternally Yours Season 1 airs on Thursdays at 8:30 PM ET on CBS.
