Matthew Gray Gubler, the actor many of us know and love as Dr. Spencer Reid from Criminal Minds, is returning to CBS in 2027 in their upcoming mystery-comedy series Einstein. We’ve been keeping an eye on this one for a while, and especially after the series’ New York Comic Con panel and screening, we’re really looking forward to it. Keep reading to learn everything we know so far!
Cast
Einstein stars Matthew Gray Gubler as Professor Lewis (“Lew”) Einstein; Gubler is also an executive producer.
His co-star, Melissa Fumero (Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘s very own Amy Santiago), plays Detective Teresa “Teri” London. At the series’ New York Comic Con 2026 panel and screening, per a release from CBS, Fumero described her character “as a capable investigator whose structured approach is constantly challenged by Lewis’ unconventional brilliance.” London and Einstein’s partnership sounds like it’s going to be a fun one—think “someone attempting to train an unruly puppy.”
Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor is a series regular, portraying Captain Marcia Frost.
Tony Shalhoub (of Monk fame) will guest star as Jack Einstein. Viewers should expect a complicated father-son relationship with Gubler’s Lew. We’re sure there will be plenty more guest stars, as procedurals—even, and maybe especially, the offbeat ones like this series promises to be—tend to have excellent ones.

According to the network: “EINSTEIN stars Matthew Gray Gubler as Lewis Einstein, the brilliant but directionless great grandson of Albert Einstein. Einstein spends his days as a comfortably tenured professor until his reckless antics land him in trouble with the law and he is pressed into service helping a local police detective (Melissa Fumero) solve her most puzzling cases.”
Also of note: This series has a little bit of everything. From comedy, to interesting mysteries, to an expanding family story, and so much more. Gubler even called it “everything I love in one single project” during the NYCC panel.

Release Date
We don’t have an exact release date—yet—but we do know Einstein will premiere sometime in 2027, mid-season for the 2026-2027 broadcast TV season. We know you’ll be able to watch it on CBS and stream on Paramount+ (live and on-demand for Premium Plus subscribers, next day/on-demand for Essential subscribers).
