Four months. That’s how long we’ve had to sit on that heartbreaking season finale that Supergirl delivered back in May. We’ve cried a lot of tears and written a lot of words to let the emotions out as the wait for Season 3 felt like an eternity.
But, luckily, the wait is almost over. Four down, one month to go.
Supergirl executive producer Andrew Kreisberg talked to DC Comics’ Tiffany Smith about Supergirl‘s emotional season 2 finale, as well as teased what we can expect in Season 3.
One of the pleasant surprises of Supergirl‘s sophomore season was the introduction of Mon-El, who developed a friendship and then romance with our leading lady, Kara Zor-El. Karamel is a relationship that is so beautiful in its origin and its flaws that it’s no wonder why fans fell in love. But we can’t help but replay that gut-wrenching goodbye scene in our heads again and again.
“It was so sad because when you’re putting a couple together — especially a couple like Chris (Wood) and Melissa (Benoist) that have amazing chemistry,” Kreisberg said. “Knowing that there’s a tragic ending at the end and nobody knows it…But it’s a forgone conclusion that the hero is going to save the day…But at what cost?”
But have no fear, we haven’t seen the last of Mon-El (and Karamel). In fact, the question of “What happened to Mon-El?” is going to be one of the big storylines in the beginning of Season 3.
“We will find out his fate this year and what happened to him,” Kriesberg said.
Another storyline we’re excited to see unfold in Season 3 is getting to explore more of Kara and Lena’s friendship. In a television world where we don’t get nearly enough female friendships, it was refreshing to see Kara and Lena’s friendship on display in Season 2. And according to Kreisberg, we can expect more of that this season, as well.
“It can’t be all sunshine and roses,” he teased. “But I think one of the things we’re going to do this season is also really talk about female friendships. Last season was all about table setting. But now you’re coming into this thing where Kara and Alex and Maggie and Lena, they can all be friends and watching the interpersonal relationships…This season is really about bringing everyone together.”
