Supergirl’s season 2 finale left us heartbroken yet optimistic. But season 3’s finale left us feeling disappointed and not-so-optimistic after it failed to pay off key storylines as far as its central heroine was concerned. Mon-El and Winn’s departure left us scratching our heads and the show’s failure to deliver any sort of payoff with the love story it was telling with Kara and Mon-El left us disappointed and questioning if these writers understand their characters.
With Supergirl set to return to Comic-Con this month, we’ve got a ton of questions following that season finale that left us feeling disappointed and not-so-optimistic about where this show is headed. But the producers have the opportunity to court fans for the upcoming season and several storylines it set up in the season finale, including Alex exploring motherhood, Lena turning towards her Luthor roots, and James exploring unmasking his secret identity for all.
1. Will Kara get to be a superhero and be happy?
There’s no denying that Supergirl made a mess of its season finale – as far as its lead heroine is concerned – when it took Mon-El away from her. Again. Don’t these showrunners know that a superhero can save the city and be happy? These producers have lost track of their main character as she continues to wage an internal battle of: Can I be Supergirl and be happy? It’s time that these showrunners find a way for Kara to find balance. Show that she can be a hero and have a personal life. While Mon-El won’t be returning in season 4, there are other ways to allow Kara to breathe in her own life. Focus on Kara as a reporter again. Focus on personal aspects outside of Supergirl. Because when it comes down to it, Kara Danvers is what makes Supergirl, not the other way around.
2. Will we get to explore Alex being a mom?
This is easily my most-anticipated storyline of the upcoming season because if there’s one character that Supergirl is doing right, it’s Alex Danvers. Supergirl understands what it has in Alex Danvers, and it knows exactly what it can accomplish in telling her story. We saw the seeds being planted that Alex would be balancing life as a superhero and a mom last season, and the season finale all but confirmed that Alex’s journey in season 4 will revolve around that balancing act. There are so many incredible layers to her character, and I cannot wait to see where this journey takes Alex.
3. Is Lena going evil this season?
While this storyline might be incredible predictable, Supergirl has made it a point to hint to audiences that Lena Luthor will go evil at some point. Given the late season 3 development and the last time we saw Lena enveloped in secrecy, it seems like Supergirl is going to start delving deeper into that storyline this season. The seeds were laid in the growing feud between Lena and Supergirl. So when Supergirl inevitably outs Kara as Supergirl to Lena, can you imagine the blow-up? That might be the very thing that sets the course for Lena going evil.
4. Will we get to see more of Guardian unmasked?
Supergirl is doing something that no other DCTV show on The CW has done before: Exploring the journey of a hero voluntarily revealing his secret identity. Well, at least that’s what I hope it’s doing. But as most season finales usually do, they serve to introduce storylines for the next season. The last we left James, he revealed his secret identity to a stranger to help her calm down. And he found that it was productive in connecting with the people in National City. So it appears that James wants to be the first hero to come out and tell the people who Guardian really is. And, not gonna lie, I’m actually quite interested in that storyline.
5. How will Kara’s evil doppelgänger factor into the season?
In the final moments of Supergirl’s season 3 finale, audiences saw a Kara-lookalike emerge in Siberia. So the question is: Who is she? The showrunners wasted no time in revealing that the Kara doppelgänger we saw is inspired by the “Red Son” storyline, which told an alternative origin story for Superman if he had landed in Russia and become a hero there rather than America. So the question is: How will this Kara doppelgänger impact this new season? Will she be the predictable, yet intriguing Big Bad? Or will she prove to be an ally? Odds are it’s the former, but any information we can get should be useful.
Supergirl will appear at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday at 3:30pm in Ballroom 20. Supergirl season 4 premieres Sunday, Oct. 14 at 8/7c on The CW.
