The Charmed reboot has been controversial, to say the least. Some people (*raises hands*) loved the original but are still willing to give this new, diverse reboot a try – especially because it’s not the same characters. Others just don’t like the idea of a reboot and absolutely hate that it doesn’t involve the original actresses and/or continue with the Halliwell family line. And, I assume, there are also people who have no idea what Charmed is and are just looking for good television.
Even if you’re in the second group (and I have a friend whose name won’t be mentioned here who changed her mind after this interview), I think Jennie Snyder Urman’s answers about why this is the moment for Charmed, and why this treatment of Charmed was the one for the moment we live in will strike a chord. The 2016 election changed a lot of things, and it makes sense that the Charmed reboot would be one of them. Also – if you’re worried about the people behind this not respecting the legacy of the original, well …I think you’ll like what Jennie had to say.
Personally, I was struck by her speaking about representation, and how she didn’t get it till she did Jane The Virgin, and she didn’t even get how much she didn’t get it. If I had no reason other than this answer to give the show a chance, this would be enough.
But then again, I also watched the Pilot – so now I can properly say, yes, this is a show you should watch. Don’t believe me? Start with the interview below:
