As each year passes, we get the pleasure of seeing more and more women kick ass in both television and movies. 2019 had its fair share of women that have done nothing but prove to us who exactly runs the world. From superheroes to just plain heroes, these female characters constantly demonstrate what it means to kick ass. Here are just a few of the most badass female characters of 2019!
Eleven, Stranger Things
It seemed as though we waited forever for the third season of Stranger Things. When it finally did come out this year, there was one particular character that constantly blew me away – Eleven. She continued to persist and fight to save her friends despite some very close calls with death. On top of that, she showed us that if a boy treats you dirty, you don’t have to take it. Instead, can find some solace in your family and newfound friendships. I just hope 2020 allows her to find some kind of peace and happiness after the fallout of season 3. And by that I mean I want her to have Hopper back.
Kara Danvers, Supergirl
You can’t talk about women that kicked ass without talking about Supergirl herself. I could talk for hours about how amazingly fierce and compassionate Kara is. But that those are just a few of the many layers we saw of Kara this. Specifically, one of the most heartbreaking storylines in Supergirl happened this year when her own sister, Alex, had to forget that she was Supergirl. Alex was always Kara’s biggest supporter and so when Kara was left without her for a huge chunk of season four, it was truly heartbreaking. But what makes Kara more than just an alien with strength and speed is her ability to overcome. Thankfully, she got her sister back before the year was over.
Cara Dune, The Mandalorian
Cara Dune shot quickly up the list of my favorite Star Wars ladies. Aside from Gwendoline Christie’s Captain Phasma, Cara Dune is the first Star Wars gal that we’ve seen go toe-to-toe physically with a man (that isn’t a force user like Rey), or with anyone for that matter. I absolutely love how equal she is physically with The Mandalorian. I am not as well-versed in current book canon, so there may be other ladies I’m unaware of, but I thought this was a nice change of pace for the Star Wars universe and I am here for it!
Jean Grey, Dark Phoenix
In Dark Phoenix, Jean made the decision to protect her team and their aircraft from being destroyed by the solar flare like energy that was headed for them. While the X-Men are on a mission to save some astronauts after their spacecraft is damaged from the solar flare, Jean ends up stranded. The energy from the solar flare is about to hit her team and their aircraft, so she absorbs it to protect them all. The energy which was absorbed into her body, ultimately amplified her psychic abilities and caused her to become dark. She gets a bad rep for the things she did once she became dark but people fail to realize because of her selfless act to protect her team, that’s why it happened. That selflessness is what makes her a badass.
