I have very big thoughts on what it takes to have a good television show. And one of those things is maintaining strength, evolving story lines, and character growth.
If you don’t have these you are stuck in a stagnant circle that makes the viewer want to be done with the show. The viewer wants to know that a story line will evolve and a character will grow.
To be honest, up until this point, I haven’t been sure that we could count on Deputy for that. The show seemed to be all over the place, throwing paint on a wall and seeing what sticks.
It felt as though all characters are side characters and that we’ll never get to know anyone.
But little by little I think that Deputy is finding its footing and I find that something to take from every character versus not knowing how to deal with any of them.
In Season 1, Episode 9 – Bill and Jerry found a footing. It may not have been the footing that they expected, but it is a footing.
WEST HOLLYWOOD
There are robberies happening in West Hollywood. Kids breaking in and stealing as many things as possible, and when 911 gets a phone call from a woman who is still in the house as it is being robbed, my heart started to beat out of my chest. I would be scared shitless – especially knowing that I had a gun in the house that they could take.
I don’t know how 911 operators do it.
Jerry finds himself involved in everything happening in West Hollywood and calls in his outstanding favor that Bill owes him. I think Bill was a little surprised that he was calling it on this – but if there is one thing that we know about Bill, we know that he’s a man of his word and sometimes words that aren’t even spoken.
Bill knows that Jerry’s worried about West Hollywood because of all the donations that can come from there for his campaign for Sheriff. Jerry is always worried about his campaign and optics.
Bill is worried about doing his job.
Bill speaks with the West Hollywood group and he has their respect. They appreciate the fact that he’s not a politician, that he’s straightforward, and he wants to do his job. Bill knows that he needs to give respect in order to get it.
He earned the support of the West Hollywood mayor, a piece of information that he could have kept to himself – but what fun is life – if you’re not throwing shit in Jerry’s face. I can’t even be mad at Bill for putting Jerry in his place.
Well, actually just makes Jerry wonder more and more. Jerry wants to know if Bill is running for sheriff. That’s all he wants to know. It’s going to drive Jerry insane unless he has all the answers, and that is why I want him to have none.
They are looking into the robberies and trying to figure out what is going on. Bishop is really fucking smart and figures it out. It’s a game – groups everywhere are robbing people and putting it on the internet for likes and comments.
In the midst of all of this – in one of the robberies – a kid gets caught with his mask up and they see the kids face. Long story short – the kids are taken down.
WHAT IS WRONG WITH CHARLIE
I want to like Charlie. I do. I feel like Joseph likes her so much and so like I feel like he’s so innocent that you don’t want to see him get hurt.
But Charlie – she’s watching out for Charlie and yet once can’t really figure out what she thinks is going to happen to herself. But she goes searching for information on Bill to help Jerry.
JERRY.
Like Charlie, Jerry isn’t going to help you. I need to know what her end game is and what Jerry’s is. I feel like both of them are shady.
And what’s going to bother me about this situation is that we can all see that Joseph is falling for her and with his relationship with Bill – it’s gonna break his heart. He’s gonna feel torn and that’s a lot.
I am anxious to see what information Charlie dug up on Bill – that Jerry thinks is his insurance that Bill won’t run. Because lets be honest, I don’t think whatever it is – unless it has something to do with his wife or daughter – it will not make him stop running.
It’ll just piss him off.
ABUELA IS THE BEST
We all know Paula has been going through a lot and she doesn’t want to admit it. She wants to be this strong person. She wants to be this person that everyone can count on.
Her Mom comes to visit and help with planning things. But she sees what her daughter is going through. She sees her pain and for me – I am so glad that Paula has someone that knows her and brings it out of her.
Paula is strong and she’s got no choice but to remain that way – for her husband and her daughter. But she also deserves to be someone that is supported, taken care of, and loved.
Moms are sometimes what you need. And I think Paula having her Mom there is what she needed.
BISHOP DESERVES MORE
Bishop has had a hard time – coming out. Bishop has said that they are not all women – and the girlfriend didn’t know how to take it. She was mad at Bishop, which I found heartbreaking.
Bishop is this person of strength, beauty, and understanding. As we watch this storyline unfold – I think that all of us will learn from it. When Bishop got out of the car and had that breakdown – you had to feel the hurt. Look, we’re all different and gender constructs are something that too many of us take at it’s tradition versus changing with the time.
We don’t know the affect that we are having on someone. But it’s out job as human beings to make sure that we are good people and accepting people.
I loved that Bill told Bishop that they could always be themselves with him. I think Bishop needed to hear that more than anything.
CADE AND HIS KIDS
I think my favorite character on this show is Cade. His foster kids – him and his want to adopt and I believe the kids want to stay. Their Grandma wants to see them.
I feel for these kids and the family that Cade and his wife want. They are building this beautiful family and them protecting those kids is of the utmost importance.
