Big Sky 1×02 “Nowhere To Run” picked up right where the “Pilot” left off after that wild WTF ending. This episode was a bit milder in the shock department. It’s time to discuss everything. Here we go!
Buried Secrets
Well, if you were hoping that Cody by some miracle survived being shot by State Patrolman Rick, Big Sky “Nowhere to Run” quickly shuts that down. The episode opens with Rick standing by as Ronald buries Cody’s truck in a deep ditch. We can only assume that Cody’s body is also in there. Not only is Cody’s truck in the ditch-when the shot goes wide, we see that Danielle and Grace’s car is also being buried. That definitely can’t be good.
After burying the vehicles, Ronald and Rick have a conversation and we finally learn how the two of them are connected. Turns out Rick’s ex wife Sally is Ronalds cousin. Now that this question is answered, we want the next one answered as to how, and why they started taking young girls.
Rick talks to Ronald about all the ways he has messed things up with what he’s done. Rick reminds Ronald that they never take girls who will be missed. He then goes on to say that the girls they take are the “dirty, gummy, scummy” kind. Now we don’t know about you but, what a woman decides to do with her own body does not make it okay for them to be kidnapped or called dirty, and gummy scummy. State Patrolman Rick is an asshole and his rhymes are annoying the shit out of us.
Cody And Cassie
Apparently Cody and Cassie’s relationship meant more than Cassie let on. Jenny once again confronts a concerned Cassie about Cody and their relationship. While they are conversing, she reminds Cassie that Cody is an alcoholic which was shocking to hear but felt a bit odd to just toss in as an afterthought. She then asks what Cody’s state of mind was when he left after talking to Cassie. We were a little confused by this only because there was nothing in the Big Sky “Pilot” to indicate that Cassie and Cody saw each other prior to him going missing. Made us question if we had missed something.
Jenny goes on to ask Cassie just how close she and Cody had gotten and if he was in love with her. Cassie doesn’t have time for Jennys bullshit and lets her know that she’s more concerned about locating Cody and heads to see the state patrolman to find out if he knows anything about what happened to him.
As Cassie drives out to find Cody, she has a flashback of a very warm moment between the two of them. It’s then that we see their relationship was in fact quite serious. It’s a shame he was killed because we would have loved to see this explored more in the show.
We’re Still Trying To Figure Jenny Out
We’re still trying to figure Jenny out. She pops in and out and spends a lot of time brooding. She tries to pretend she isn’t that concerned about Cody being unreachable but she really is worried. Her hard exterior is keeping people away but right now she and Cassie really need to be on the same page. We hate that the two of them are fighting but most importantly we want Jenny to wake up and realize that Cassie is right about Rick. He is not a good guy and a real partner should know to trust the word of their colleague. We get that she’s pissed about Cassie and Cody hooking up but, there are more important things that need to be handled.
Let’s Make A Plan
Grace, Danielle, and “Michelle” AKA Jerrie, are still being held captive by Ronald. All three of them are trying to figure out what Ronalds plan is and they’re trying to figure out how to escape before anything bad happens to them. While Danielle is the big sister, her maturity level would indicate otherwise. She’s in a panic and saying things like “I’m gonna be on Dateline” while her sister is staying calm and focusing on getting them out.
As they try to come up with a plan, Danielle whispers to Grace that she thinks Jerrie is a he, when Jerrie asks what the two are talking about, she asks “Do you have a penis?.” The question is highly inappropriate and it was an awkward lead in to get to that moment. Jerrie handles it well though and says quite cheekily that she does have a penis and then says “you’re not gonna try to take advantage of me are you?.”
Although it was a weird way to reveal that Jerrie is in fact male, when you think of the scene that follows, it makes sense.
This is Me
Ronald has been instructed by Rick to get Jerrie who he rudely refers to as the “lot lizard” showered and cleaned up to send her off to be trafficked. When Ronald shows up, he pulls Jerrie out and tells her to strip and shower because she’s going to a better place. Jerrie is hesitant and asks where she’s going and tells Ronald she doesn’t want to get in the shower. Ronald tells her he won’t look and threatens her with the stun gun if she doesn’t do what she’s told.
Jerrie proceeds to remove her clothes and steps into the shower. She then turns around and tells Ronald she wants him to look at her. When he does, Jerrie removes the wig she has been wearing and reveals that she is in fact a man. It was a brave moment and we know Jerrie did it to ultimately protect Danielle and Grace whom she’s starting to form a bond with. This immediately catches him off guard and he returns Jerrie to the truck. Danielle and Grace ask what happened and Jerrie says “He had a plan and now that plan is ruined.” Jerrie also informs the girls that Ronald is part of a sex-trafficking ring.
Cassie Is On To You Rick
Cassie is a badass and we love her. When she goes to see Rick, she is immediately suspicious. His behavior as always is creepy. The first thing out of his mouth is that she’s a beautiful Black woman and that they don’t get many Black women in Montana. Cassie is there to do a job and all he can focus on his her looks. Can we say pervert?.
Cassie grills the hell out of Rick and doesn’t believe a word that comes out of his mouth and with good reason. She wants to go up to the Church of Glory and Transcendence which is where Cody was supposed to be headed. Rick tries to divert her attention from that but she makes it clear she is going up there and also informs him she will hit up a few truck stops too.
Cassie lets Jenny know about her weird encounter with Rick but she and the secretary Denise who just so happens to be the freaking cousin of Ricks ex-wife Sally, try and tell her that Rick is harmless and one of the most innocent men they know. Cassie insists that something about Rick is off and she’s not letting up on ruling him out as a suspect.
We Don’t Trust Denise
We don’t trust Denise especially now that we know she’s related to Rick’s ex-wife. Maybe we’re wrong but, she is too trusting of Rick and that makes us wonder if she too knows what he and Ronald are doing. Wouldn’t working at a detective agency be the perfect cover-up and also a way for you to keep an eye on the cases you know your former brother-in-law is in on?
Mother May I?
In the Big Sky “Pilot” we were introduced to Ronalds mom and we saw how strange their relationship was but, that was only the tip of the iceberg. Ronald is stressing out and lashing out at her because of her constant jabs about him being a truck driver. She tells him he needs to go upstairs and “masturbate himself and come back with a better attitude” yes, you heard that right. Did your jaw drop? ours did. It was so disturbing and the way she said it was like telling your kid to go take a nap. Sooooooooo cringe!
The cringe fest didn’t stop there. At the end of the episode, he shows up in her bedroom and we’re sure your minds were going in the direction ours was. We were thinking either he was going to kill her or they were going to, well, ya know and we definitely didn’t want to see either of those things. We were surprised when he told her he couldn’t sleep and then climbed into bed with her. We’re not sure if this was supposed to look like a tender Mother/Son moment since it was shown in conjunction with Grace, Danielle, and Jerrie singing a hymn but, we were still creeped out.
Things Are About To Take An Uglier Turn
Big Sky “Nowhere to Run” didn’t end with a shocking moment like the “Pilot” did but we do know something is coming. Like Rick said, things are about to take an uglier turn. Rick and Ronald’s sex-trafficking plan has been screwed up, and Cassie and Jenny are investigating. Cassie has called Ricks ex-wife Sally to get some information on him and he does not like that. That situation is definitely not going to end well. We don’t know what will happen from here on out but we’re looking forward to the next episode.
