Trickster, a Canadian coming-of-age story, is set to premiere on The CW on January 12th. And it’s honestly like nothing you’ve seen before. From it’s cast of Indigenous characters and actors, to the traditions we’ve never seen enough of being explored in filmmaking, this story is one worth watching and getting to know. Here are 4 things you should know about Trickster.
1. It brings Indigenous storytelling to a mainstream audience.
Trickster is an Indigenous story told by Indigenous creators and starring Indigenous people. And honestly, we’ve never experienced something so raw, real, and relatable. It opens doors, bridges gaps, and helps the viewer understand a community they might not be a part of. It also gives those that are part of the Indigenous community, an opportunity to be seen and portrayed in an honest light that doesn’t exploit them but tries to understand them.
2. It’s based on a book.
Son of a Trickster, the book this show is based on, is part of the The Trickster trilogy by Eden Robinson. The author Monkey Beach and winner of many prizes for her writing, Robinson blends the woes of being a teenager with indigenous beliefs, uneven family dynamics, and ravens that speak to you. It’s weird, funny, twisted, and an exciting start to a story not told.
3. It’s already got a second season coming.
One of the biggest worries when jumping into an engaging story like this is that you want more and fear that it will get cancelled before you get a season two. And with everything going on in the world, coronavirus at the forefront of our thoughts, it’s hard to take a chance and connect with a show. But with Trickster, you don’t have to worry. The CBC Television series has already been renewed for season two!
4. It’s a supernatural thriller drama.
There’s something strange happening to Jared, the main character of this story who is played by Joel Oulette. And no, we’re not talking about his drunk mother or the fact that he gets by selling drugs to support his family. He’s starting to notice things about his life that don’t make sense and that make him realize, for better or for worse, magic is tied to him and has always been. The talking raven might be a clue…
