Welcome back Nancy Drew fans! This week’s episode gave us backstories into not one, but two characters this season! One was a much-needed Bess backstory and the other was more details into how Odette is possessing George. Bess is one of my favorite members of the Drew crew and so I enjoyed finding out how a British girl ended up in Horseshoe Bay, looking for her lost family. I hope they keep added layers to Bess, I like her. I was pleased to finally find out how the freaking death shroud works too, and how Odette has been controlling George. Thank you for writers for some much-needed exposition, I appreciate you! Now let’s dive into this week’s episode of Nancy Drew, “The Case of the Spider Sapphire.”
Bess Was Married to a Psycho

Okay, the biggest takeaway of this episode, is the fact that Bess was married and she was married to an abuser and a manipulator, oh and also a thief. Oh, Bess! I knew your past was bad, but I didn’t know it was this bad, you ran away from not only your home but your abuser as well. We finally get a glimpse into what drove Bess to move to Horseshoe Bay and live out of a van for months. I was ready for her backstory, but I honestly didn’t expect it to be as jaw-dropping as it was.
Bess used to be a con artist and a thief when she first ran away from home. Her ex-husband, Stephen, basically took her off the streets and taught her the “game”, think of him as Fagin from Oliver Twist. Bess finally got tired of being abused and she fled, but not before she planted drugs on Stephen at the airport which ended with him being arrested and put in jail.
Bess is a unicorn and must be protected at all times! Ace and Nancy need to deal with her ex-husband and settle this once and for all. Bess’s life so far has worked out for the better since she moved to Horseshoe Bay, she has a family and friends who love and care about her. Everything she has worked hard to built will come crashing down if Stephen has his way and gets her to steal a beloved jewel-studded watch from Aunt Diana. Don’t do it Bess! It will not end well. Also, don’t let this fool try and blackmail you into doing what he wants. I hate Stephen, he’s gross and has a violent streak, I can’t imagine what Bess must have endured in her past with him.
The Shroud and Odette

Odette is not leaving George’s body anytime soon and I feel like the crew is running out of ideas as to how to stop her from taking over completely. We know that if George dies, she dies too, and I’m pretty positive that George isn’t up for dying twice. Who would be? Odette is starting to get stronger however and that part is troubling, also Odette has a crush on Bess which was hilarious to me. George finally gets around to telling Nick she is being possessed by Odette and was relieved because now everyone knows and they can all work together.
Nancy and George take a road trip to the house of the former owner of the shroud and find out he died the same night Nancy used the shroud to bring back George. We all know what that means. Listen writers, we know how this story will end, I’ve watched enough Harry and Voldermort battles to know that neither George and Odette can live while the other is still alive so Odette honey, you gotta go! Figure it out Nancy and then locate Hannah to do some kind of reverse resurrection spell so everyone can get on with their lives and Odette can finally be at peace. The only problem is Odette does not want to give up life on this earth and living in George’s body. Maybe they could track down Odette’s former lover’s ghost? Not gonna lie, I’d watch that.
Family First

While Bess is off trying to bond with her Aunt Diana and the rest of the Marvin family, Stephen kidnaps both Nancy and George in an effort to blackmail Bess into stealing the coveted watch her aunt always wears. It’s worth a ton of money, and he claims if Bess steals it for him they will be even and he will leave her alone. Bess, he is a liar and he cannot be trusted, which is why I was furious with her for stealing it but I knew why she did it. He was going to kill both of her friends – Stephen is a monster. Lock his ass up please!
Nancy and George are saved thanks to Ace and Nick but poor Bess is caught red-handed for stealing because that watch has a GPS tracker on it and Stephen slipped it back into Bess’s coat after she gave it to him. Damn it! Aunt Diana is pissed and ex-communicates her from the family. Just like that that Diana! For real? I mean Bess can’t even tell her side of the story? Gah! So now Bess is homeless again, but she still has her friends who really have been more of a family to her than the Marvin’s ever have.
I am sad for her though, because she just wants to belong and I thought that Aunt Diana had really bonded with Bess, so I am sad to see that dissolved so quickly. Hopefully Nancy or maybe even Ace can talk some sense into Bess’s Aunt and she will come around and forgive Bess.
